Romanian national Vasile Culea beat and tortured an 86-year old British woman to death and tied up, gagged and beat her 88-year old husband ex-mayor Ken. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-derbyshire-63414407
As a result, the British taxpayer now gets to pay for this man's board, food supply, safety, television and protection for the rest of his life. Is this justice?

Presumably he will be deported if he lives to complete his sentence (and it wouldn't upset his cat!).

I personally cannot think of any way that justice could be done in this case- 34 years and being sent back to his home country seems very lenient considering his actions. In 1964, Parliament passed a law suspending the death penalty across Great Britain (this did not extend to Northern Ireland) for all crimes except high treason, “piracy with violence”, arson in royal dockyards, and espionage. It was only with the Human Rights Act coming into force in 1998 that the death penalty was banned under UK law in all circumstances. Perhaps the time has come to revisit this?
// if he lives to complete his sentence //

It's disappointing that the judge deemed fit to commute the 14 year sentence for GBH to be served concurrently. Had they handed down a consecutive sentence, this would almost guarantee that his last shuffle along the mortal coil would occur in prison.
Interesting that the OP's predominant concerns seem to be costs and nationality - speaks volumes.
If it speaks volumes, canary, you’re not listening.
There's not much comfort in prison especially if he's facing a minimum of 34 years.
The death penalty costs the US more than a life sentence.

Another disadvantage of the death penalty is that juries are far less likely to find the defendant guilty of murder and opt for manslaughter instead. There is that niggling little doubt in their minds.

Those that think prison is 'comfortable' lack imagination and have never set foot inside a high security prison.

they can always deport this one back to Willesden, where life is cheap

Cost is not an issue - some deserve to die for their crimes. And however uncomfortable life is in prison (and I'm not convinced that lifers have it too bad) they are still living - which their victims are not.
// The death penalty costs the US more than a life sentence //

Thanks Barry. I like this very much!

I like it because those who would choose to reintroduce capital punishment can no longer table 'cost' to support their argument. In fact, vengeance can be their only motive to bring back the death penalty.

Vengeance is not just morally wrong. It flies in the face of our endeavours to become a civilized nation.
Sickening, not enough words for what I’d like to see done to that crudd.
eventually british prisons will be 90% full of romanians and albanians
then exclusive prisons for jihadists.
We are not uncivilised here, we do not use murder as a form of punishment and then try to excuse it by claiming it doesn't count as murder. If that means we pay to keep someone incarcerated and thinking about what they have done to deserve it, then so be it.
Oh give it a rest Zebu, what the hell is civilised about this monster ?? I'd happily see the POS hung !! Go and bleat on all you like - not even remotely interested ...
It occurs to me that judges must have supreme self-control, dealing with this kind of stuff in a calm, dispassionate way.

Much much more than I could do.
Is there a case for keeping dangerous dogs caged for the rest of their life instead of putting them down?
// is there a case for keeping dangerous dogs caged for the rest of their life //
Thought we could send them back to serve out their sentence in their native country.
// Is there a case for keeping dangerous dogs caged for the rest of their life //

There is always a case. In the very least before any dog is destroyed, avenues such as neutering should be explored in an attempt to control the dog's behaviour.

Not being an animal psychiatrist, I do not know to what extent caging a dog for life would have on its mental well being and/or its general physical health.

Sadly the real reason for euthanizing dogs comes down to cost and the lack of funding :-(
