So why all the panicking, testing and isolating? Yes people might pass this cold on but so what? We never tried to enforce isolation in the past when people were spreading a cold virus. This unnecessary obsession with public health safety should stop.

// This unnecessary obsession with public health safety should stop.//
and the obsession with dead people too

time to - - er bury it...
Do so many people go into hospital on ventilators/in ICU with just colds. Over 300 deaths listed for today... I know it was affected by reporting delays but the daily average from 'colds' is now well over 100 a day
How did the lockdown go in the other home nations?
Hardly anyone contracted covid I assume?
Good luck guys. This has been done to err death sooooo many times. Every goverment in every nation and all the doctors and scientists are having a laugh and plotting to turn us into sheep. Presumably thats the answer you want
Er, no... case numbers for the individual nations of the UK in the past week would be nice.
Even if Omicron puts fewer people in hospital out of, say, every 100,000 infected, you can still end up with far more people in hospital if the actual number of infected people rises dramatically. (On New Year's Eve, one in 15 people in the UK had Covid. That's one hell of an infection rate!). Take a look at the 'three month trend' line here, to see why the situation is very worrying:

The big increase in the number of people in hospital comes about at the same time as the number of NHS staff off work with Covid has risen dramatically. That's why hospital trusts are now increasingly declaring critical incidents:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-59866650

It's also why ambulance waiting times have risen dramatically in many parts of the country. If you have a stroke or a heart attack, your best chance of survival is if you can be hospitalised and receiving specialist treatment within an hour at the very most. Many such patients though are now having to wait for more than an hour for an ambulance to turn up and then being held in the back of the ambulance outside A&E for several hours when they eventually arrive at hospital.

Patients with less life-threatening conditions but who might be in agony after a fall are now having to wait over 12 hours for an ambulance to arrive in many parts of the country and, once again, then being stuck in the back of the ambulance for several hours after that.
Dave, did you know about the effects and after effects of Omicron the moment it was identified?
Do you know everything about it now or are you, as everyone else is, still learning?
And again, who is panicking? Why are you guilty of using that word far too often?
Try using.....being careful.
//I know it was affected by reporting delays but the daily average from 'colds' is now well over 100 a day//

As it probably is during most winters. Vulnerable people and those with underlying conditions often succumb to seemingly minor ailments. About a third of those entering hospital are admitted for reasons other than Covid and just happen to test positive when they are screened before admission. Huge swathes of the country's employees are off work when perfectly well. Something like 4m people allegedly had Covid in the last week of 2021 and if they all abided by the rules they should all be off work - a ludicrous state of affairs. Yet nowhere near that many had recorded a positive test - maybe a million, tops. So 3m "sufferers" were going about their business (and apparently spreading a lethal disease whilst they were about it). Meanwhile vital business sectors and services suffer severe disruption because their employees - fit and well - are confined to their homes.

It's a complete farce and the constant testing of people who are fit and well needs to end forthwith. With upwards of 3m plague carriers roaming around unfettered it is preposterous to lock up people who are taking tests for no reason.
Only when statistics for death by other causes are honestly recorded and reported, not "with COVID", will this obsessive quest to 'beat the virus' be edged to the back burner.
How much misery and torment will have gone by in reaching that point will be airbrushed and massaged to fit the flawed actions of politicians and their vanity in thinking they can defeat nature.

Private Fraser was right and a generation or two will die before their time because of this tunnel vision.
The Democrats are rolling back on all sorts of 'tough stances' they had on Covid. Might just be political to drive the Covid numbers down and Corn Pop's numbers up.
Talking of Biden, he reckoned yesterday that things will improve in 2020. ;-/
Be fair, Spice...he has no free time or time to think.
"On New Year's Eve, one in 15 people in the UK had Covid."

Where is the proof for that claim, Buenchico ?

Last Jan 4th (2021) there was 30,775 in hospital, as compared to your 17,276 figure, which looks like for Jan 4th 2022.
How would anybody know how many people have a cold?
We don't report that do we?
Do if you want a fortnight? off work.
Just been reduced to 5 days in the US.
// bout a third of those entering hospital are admitted for reasons other than Covid and just happen to test positive when they are screened before admission.//

and they seem to die more as well
what from ?- their usual diagnosis?
if it is associated with covid, they die more.

You know two humps and then no hump?
the death curve silly! - the camel hump curve that tells you 186 000 have died and its not from the common cold !

well - have off the covid hump and..... you dont get back to sea level
you dont get back to the usual death line.
basal
the low flat one
there is a lowish plateau

well it cant be covid that has been shaved off
so it is their normal diagnosis
it is just that more are dying than normal
( thought to be the effect of covid co-infecting)

just a thought to nestle amongst the usual
1. I have said that covid doesnt exist
2. flu = covid
3. stop testing and it'll stop covid ( sic) a fave of NJ
4. I have no idea what the difference between a ratio and a rate
or as Mozza might say - - the usual inanities we expect on AB
people from various sources have been saying it for weeks, the problem is the elements who are loving this have grasped it to extend their powers of control.
//or as Mozza might say - - the usual inanities we expect on AB//

Not a phrase I've ever used, but as you were.
//stop testing and it'll stop covid ( sic) a fave of NJ//

Why do you continually misrepresent the truth, Peter? Do you get some sort of kick out of it? I'm afraid I'll have to return to simply skipping over your posts, which is a bit of a shame because very occasionally you make sense.
//How did the lockdown go in the other home nations?
Hardly anyone contracted covid I assume?//

I tested positive on Boxing Day so at least 1 person definitely caught covid.
