is beyond belief. Mass graves. Around 10,000 dead kids discarded and secretly buried. I am ashamed to be a Catholic.

Paigntonian, I'm not religious, but if atheists had committed those kind of crimes- it wouldn't make me ashamed of being one. If you have lost your faith and belief, that's one thing. But you should know they aren't all the same.

not hidden tho

"Tora: You're showing the kind of intolerance that you accuse the Catholic Church of exhibiting. The Catholic Church takes no prisoners and you do the same. " - Not intolerance, bewilderment. By your own admission you are ashamed to be a catholic. This post is about a relatively minor Catholic atrocity in the scheme of things yet you stay attached to it? Why? simple question.
Of course not all Catholics are warped but they are very wrong to support in any way the Catholic Church.

Read all that went on in these homes in the name of God and the Church and the sexual and physical abuse by priests and nuns then tell me that Catholics should still worship.

I say all that went on. What we know has been forced and dragged out. There will still be so much evil hidden.

Pixie, atheists don't hide their cruelty and abuse behind a cloak of religion. Neither is there an organised hierarchy protecting the perpetrators of so much vile abuse.
Fair enough, gness.
what close all the confessionals and that will be an end to child abuse?
I really dont think so
I was a boarder in 2 Singapore convents, one collected baby orphans thru a hatch at the gate (mixed blood of soldiers with chinese). No babes died but some might use hospital.

My dter also went to 2 convents in Berks & Bucks that have her a better education than my sons who attended state school.

No convent I know of has ever been accused of abuse.

Irish convents seem the only ones that have soiled hands.
The naming and shaming of the "debauched" and pregnant unmarried women at Mass would hopefully act as a deterrent to others.
No naming and shaming of the fathers though!
To be guilty of this sin the women concerned would have needed full knowledge of the shameful act. Most young girls in Ireland wouldn't have a clue where babies came from. The majority were innocent victims of predatory, perhaps ignorant, men.
The high number of infant deaths is inexcusable.
The "***" children were victimised at school on account of their second dose of original sin.
I think the nuns and priests concerned were guilty of sadistic cruelty.
In my previous post the word bas**** has been erased. Why?
Surley it dosent matter what your occupation is- priest, vicar, bus driver or chef..? Not all catholic priests or nuns cant be trusted-
Its down to the individual person!

Im a catholic and if you think that your own priest in any way shape or form was a risk to children then i would wonder why you would attend mass there.

Similarly though I would feel for your local priest being accused or suspected of sexual abuse just because they are a priest - you CANNOT tar everyone with the same brush!

These are bad individuals... sadly plenty of them & the cover ups that went on!
By the way Paig.... i personally dont think you must attend church! Thats MY take on it.

Mabye you shouldnt as you feel so strongly & dont contribute financially - but talk to God in your own way from home or your garden or somewhere you can have some peace xx
Just to throw in an A lister; our local priest was son of Gp Capt Townsend.
I think it was probably the opposite way round. Religion was invented to control people, and particularly women. The misogyny came first and the excuses after.
Individuals finding those excuses "acceptable"... are the ones to blame.
If I put up links, Tambo, you will probably ignore them. But if you have a care you can find hundreds of examples of cruelty and abuse in convents and homes run by nuns throughout the world.
Control women - perhaps in the begining but not in our laterly generations. I valued the 'no divorce' of the church. Stick out marriage for the sake of children.
Gness I know how deeply you resent RCs but you are very talented & had wonderful work; was that from your catholic education?
Tambo, whatever I am or do is despite my Catholic education and upbringing.
Turning my back on Catholicism was the best move I made in my life.
//Stick out marriage for the sake of children//

That often does them more harm than good. Surely, you would prefer your children to learn healthy loving relationships?
I don't judge people I don't know but have had years of it on here from those who don't know me.

It's something you sadly get used to.
Ireland becoming an independant nation in 1921 was the very worse thing that could have been happenned for Irish women and children
