Can someone please explain to me why the EUSSR thinks it has any right to demand access to our waters for fishing. On what basis? ok so the French/Spanish fishermen will be annoyed if we stop them hoovering up the sea but that's not basis for claiming a right is it?

And that answers the question how, precisely?
The answer to your question, Tora, is that the EU has still not got used to the idea that we are no longer a member. They believe we are still subservient to their demands and the fish issue is one of many they insist on before agreeing to a free trade agreement. Our fish is worth a lot of cash to them and there is nothing "free" about an agreement that gives it away.

canary????
They just try it on. They know that they have no rights but feel they have sufficient power to force others to heel. Probably helps that the Commission doesn't have the incentive to do right for it's members at the same level national leaders have. (Well I mean most national leaders since some seem utterly devoted to ensuring no UK waters fishing rights for their country.)
Yes, that's a good question. I can't think of a single good reason. I'm sure there are millions of people in the UK asking the same question.

What amazes me is that none of our broadcasters have attempted to answer it with a documentary or two while the 'negotiations' were ongoing. The BBC has been a model of impartiality on the subject, suggesting on BBC news yesterday that the issue was about 'continued access to each others waters.' Yes, 'each others waters'? I hadn't realised we were insisting on fishing in EU waters after Brexit (are we?).
It could even have helped negotiations if the general sense of puzzlement over here (regarding the EU's bizarre demands) had been televised - they must think we, like The BBC, think their demands are perfectly reasonable.

yes the EUSSR has plenty of waters of course but I imagine the French and Spanish have hoovered pretty much every piece of plankton out of it so they want to continue to plunder ours.
If Boris does not insist on sole rights for UK fishermen in UK waters it will go down as one of the greatest betrayals of modern times.
the British have sold off most of their fish quotas to the EU anyway. I suppose they'll actually have to go out and catch fish themselves once this is all over. Then it seems they want to sell most of their catch to the EU, who will impose tariffs if there's no deal.
'Sole rights' - surely our fishermen want to catch other species too?
^^That did occur to me as I was typing.
There are five families who control fishing in the UK known as the Codfathers. All five are on the Sunday Times rich list.Multi millionaires.
The government have allowed them to operate their dodgy practices cutting out the small man.
Never heard of the black fish scandal ?
You'll probably dismiss this as lefty liberal nonsense but the fishing debacle is not all the fault of the EU.

Like jno says, there’s no point having all that fish to yourself if you can’t sell it.
The no deal contingencies drawn up by the EU are actually meant to help each side
I couldn't care less if the EU has the right to fish in UK waters. None of this is worth the damage.
“ And, for fisheries, the EU is proposing a year-long legal framework for "continued reciprocal access by EU and UK vessels to each other's waters" in 2021.”

So it isn’t one way.
This is dog in the manger stuff by Brexit fundamentalists

ich: "So it isn’t one way. " - Well it really is, British waters are much much more fertile. I'd like to merge bank accounts with Bill Gates but I suspect he might not.

jno: "Then it seems they want to sell most of their catch to the EU, who will impose tariffs if there's no deal. " - err no, currently we import a lot of fish from the EUSSR, fish that has actually been caught in our own waters, so our fishermen can catch it and we'll but it, win win.

but it = buy it
Is my geography not that good then, as i´ve never heard of the EUSSR. Where is it exactly?
The EUSSR is a contrived term to compare the EU with the dictatorial and dominant nature of the USSR.
