This is a genuine question.

Why?

I just don't get it.

The Jewish people, throughout history, have been persecuted - a friend of mind lives in the Kazimierz part of Krakow and I visit him a couple of times a year, and to this day, in some courtyards, you can still see the bullet holes in walls from the pogroms.

Why do some in Labour hate them so much?

Theland; //but they would also have to dump quite a few front benchers.//

With whom would you replace them, & who to lead, in order to gain your vote?
Jim, //I would have also thought it went without saying that the "ancient notions" I was referring to were the explicitly negative, offensive and conspiratorial ones, rather than those about career choices.//

What you call ‘negative, offensive and conspiratorial notions emanate from several factors, not least the lie that the Jews killed Jesus. As we know, human beings are prone to jumping on bandwagons and, not being adverse to propagating lies when it suits, sticking the knife into those they perceive to be different. Because of their self-maintained exclusivity, the Jews are and always have been different. They are unique. They have always been money lenders, bankers and traders and they’ve made a lot of money from it, which means from other people, so whilst it might be politically correct to say that //any "ancient notion" relating to Jewish people and finances is utterly without foundation. //, it simply isn’t true.
n. If I may add, for jim;
Although Jews make up only 0.2 percent of the world's
population, they win an astonishing 22 percent of Nobel Prizes. In fact, six have won so far this year.
This year's crop of Jewish winners includes:
- All three scientists who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry: Arieh Warshel, Michael Levitt and Martin Karplus
- Francois Englert who was half of the team that won the Nobel Prize in Physics
- James E. Rothman and Randy W. Schekman who were two of the three scientists awarded the Nobel prize in Medicine
Khandro, I've never known a Jewish mother who doesn't have high hopes for her son. As a career, the local factory just won't do. ;o)
n. What is puzzling is, that proportion doesn't apparently apply to the Israeli population.
Do you mean like this;
Khandro, Haha! Yes, exactly. Great stuff. So typical!

Non-Jews account for about a third of the population of Israel. I don’t know how that affects your figures?
The year K's referring to is 2013, although of course the point is still valid.

If it's a lie then surely that implies that it's baseless? Also... look, I don't want to get into an argument about something which in substance we agree with, but can you at least see the point I'm trying to make? Tying up Jewish people in any sort of global elitist conspiracy, or applying various of the insults they have been subject to throughout history, is wholly without foundation. That's true whether or not there have typically been a lot of Jewish people involved in business. That's the point. That's all I'm trying to say.
I don't know any Jewish people.

I do remember, as a kid. not giving another child a sweet and they told me to 'stop being a Jew'

Saying that, my mum used to call me a 'dirty Arab' whenever I got dirty.
Jim, //If it's a lie then surely that implies that it's baseless?//

Did you not understand my post? The only lie I referred to is the one that accuses the Jews of killing Jesus. I thought I’d made it clear that the //"ancient notion" relating to Jewish people and finances// isn’t, as you claim, //utterly without foundation.//
Yes, and I've made it clear that I was talking about conspiracy theories.

Why are we arguing?
Because what you call conspiracy theories aren’t necessarily conspiracy theories - and for the reasons I’ve explained.
Look up the history of the Jews, middle ages and before and you will see where and why the money/money lending/financial association came about...basically they weren't allowed to do anything else...

The ones I'm talking about ("global elistist conspiracy") manifestly are. I'm bored of having to explain what it is I don't agree with.
I don't know how or when all this animosity towards Jews has come about. Up here in nearby Prestwich there has been a Jewish community for many years. Approx 30,000 plus. They had their own schools, synagogues, hospitals etc. Hard working people , tailors, dressmakers, shopkeepers, mill owners,bankers. I don't ever remember there being any trouble . I wish that we could turn the clocks back to an era where people were allowed to 'live and let live'.
//"global elistist conspiracy"// First time you've mentioned that, Jim. If you're bored with trying to explain, perhaps you might make the effort to let me know just what you are trying to explain. // //any "ancient notion" relating to Jewish people and finances is utterly without foundation. // is a far cry from "global elitist conspiracy". That's the stuff of Dan Brown!!
It's not the first time I've mentioned it, in point of fact. Check my post at 13.40 today, and by implication, the 23.51 post last night.

And, again, let me underline just how stupid this whole discussion is. I had no intention at any point of disagreeing with you. My post on the first page that started all this was meant to provide a different angle supporting your criticism of Labour's inability to "understand the difference between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism". How you managed to turn it into an argument is beyond me. Maybe I could have gone into more details but the reason I did not is because something that I consider to be wholly nonsensical and frankly offensive is not something I think it's worth my taking the time to outline in minute and intricate detail.

The simple point I am making, then, is that there are clearly strands to anti-Semitism that appeal particularly to a socialist view of the world. Those strands are wholly abhorrent, and inasmuch as they stray into conspiracy theories they are wholly baseless. That is all. Can you at least agree on that point?
