Do you think there is too much current affairs on Radio 4, with PM (for an hour) followed by the 6 o'clock news straight away? Or should one be moved, or changed? Or is the scheduling suited for its audience? what do you think ...

BBC4 is MEANT to be intelligent speech - mainly targetted at those interested in current affairs.

At risk of sounding trite, moving the 6 o'clock news to a later slot would probably just confuse people! :-p

I presume the scheduling is carefully chosen to time it right for business people with hectic schedules who want to listen to the news on the way home from work. Between 5 and 6 they do not want to drive home to find they're listening to the second half of a play, or, if they swapped it over, today's dementia programme.

If you look at the schedule, within the bounds of "intelligent speech" it appears to be excellent programming. I think it's well pitched at its audience, hence the good listener numbers.

I agree with JB. I drive home at 5pm and listen to PM but when I get home the radio is turned off. 'drivetime' slots usually are exectly what it says on the tin, a different demographic then tunes in at 6.

Oh brilliant thank you very much! Do you think it would be an option to perhaps make the PM into the news which is in that style, but longer then?
Is this homework!?!

its a project i'm working on yes, and i needed views on this topic and thought this would be the perfect place to do so.

any other thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

I would say to leave it as it is. I tihnk the time for the fresh new programming on Radio 4 is in the day time. On the way home, that's when people want what they expect from BBC Radio -

  1. Cheese

  2. Easy listening

  3. Jazz/Classical mix

  4. Intelligent speech

  5. Debate, news and sport

I think the programming from 5-7 reflects that at the moment.

Good luck with your project.
