Had someone (young guy) out to quote for mowing very overgrown small back lawn..... Weeding 23ft border back garden. Front garden ..small ... 12ft x10ft ish. Clip small hedge, weed and cut plants back.

Nice enough guy seemed genuine.... He has quoted £20. Must admit I thought he has well under priced the job. Now I wonder if he did it....would it not be done properly. It's just a thought I have put out there for other people's opinions. Thanks in advance for your comments.

Yes, it's a low quote but it might lead to more work for him and it will at least greatly reduce what is overgrown and then you can decide whether to employ him again.

I paid £12 last week to have a small, very over-grown lawn cut but it was £4 more than he usually charges because I was outside of his usual area.

Thanks mamya .... I did think that as there's more thing we want done. We won't decide ATM as someone else coming Monday. At least he turned up and was pleasant... Just little concerned he isn't up to the job... Spose we will have to compare the next one. X

See how long it takes him to do all that and then pay him a fair price for all his labour.

No mallyh he quoted back garden at £15 first then saw front garden and said £20 for it all.....

Depends how long it takes him I suppose.

I pay my gardener £15 per hour. But as Mamya says he may be hoping it will lead to more work.

My gardener has picked up 5 new customers along here from my neighbours ask him to do them.

just going off on a tangent here, dunnitall, We had two decorators round yesterday to quote for some work. They both came up with the same quote. Now I can't decide which one to choose! :-(

Tilly....oh dear, decisions decisions! Darcey we have already decided if we have him we will pay him at least £30.... As I'm concerned he won't be getting enough for his time.

Darcey, they were both nice. One was a quietly spoken, polite Eastern European and the other was an outgoing, dreadlocked Rastafarian.

I don't want to turn either of them down.

Dunnitall, don't worry about him doing it wrong. Just give him the mower and supervise the cutting back of any precious plants. The rest of it will not take much skill.

Just make sure he has insurance, in case he cuts his toes off...:-)

Tilly we've had a few Eastern European guys work here and they're usually very hard working- had to persuade them to have a cup of tea but they did not stop working

Tilly... I doubt insurance is in play here.... But he was pleasant and knows what we want. Would love to give him job and definitely would give him a fair price as I'm not into fleecing anyone. Will have wait and see what Monday's guy comes up with. Really loathe all this....but needs must etc. Being old, disabled and in bad health is so debilitating as we don't like having to rely on others. :-(

Just a thought Dunnitall, make sure it's clear if he takes the cuttings, branches with him or do your Council take it free?

Our Council charge per bag so our gardener takes it all and burns it on his allotment"
