It wasn't even a joke, he was imitating the southern accent. Obviously the lady who complained had never heard of this.

" Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery definition

To imitate someone is to pay the person a genuine compliment — often an unintended compliment.

For goodness sake Minty, speeks properly Englush girl so's we's can unnerstan ya.

It could be. Does anyone remember Jim Davidson's TV routines featuring his 'mate', Chalky? I never felt altogether comfortable watching them.
sob sob..me just a pom !
that was a wee bit different Sandy.. a parody of a Jamaican character not altogether sympathetic I agree...
Strewth, 1ozzy, you'd need to go out beyond the black stump to find another compatriot who'd tar Jocks, and Jockesses, with the same brush they use to describe Poms.
begorra bejabers Sandy you could be right to be sure...
There is one part of the Telegraph link I do not understand , it mentions the demand for 'safe spaces' on campus. What might they be? Am I correct in assuming they are places where only gay transgender and non whites are allowed? If that is the case , and I hope it is not, it shows discrimination is getting worse not better.
I'am beyond the black stump Sandy, only by about fifty kilometers or so.

Guess my "pommy" heritage is slowly slipping from my mind.
agree Eddie... bit of positive discrimination...
^Pathetic, isn't it.
/// It wasn't even a joke, he was imitating the southern accent. ///

Is it only black people who speak in a southern accent?
This is a mad story. Mobley's response was:

“I’m from the deep south and Matthew often makes fun of the southern accent just as I often make fun of his British accent,” said Mobley. “Race was not an issue. He was imitating a southern accent, not putting on a black accent, and there was nothing racist or malicious about it.”

People need to focus on actual racism (eg. the Destinee Mangum case), rather than silly jokes like this.
Khan, you will always get a few that will twist it, there's a few on here, I've been there myself, they always use the ACE card.
very good try AOG !

the southern accent he was 'doing' was er white
I am not sure ( actually I am) the afrocaribbeans dont eat 'grits' and call them as such - references in the article to deep south and Gone with the Wind

[ re read the article - the concert had an ante-bellum feel to it
Gone with the wind - only Mamie is black there isnt she? Southern accent and black accent are distinguished in the article as tho they are different and not synonyms ]

and boys and girls face it
in public whether or not it is done in the canteen
if a member of the public heard a policeman says in public to another policeman who is a great friend "o yeah I had to arrest another of your nag-nag drug runner friends in sarf london"
and the public complained
then running a defence of gay banter in the ensuing enquiry would I suggest not really work

I mean didnt your parents say to you when you were 5
you have to be careful what you say in public /
mine did
and vulcan:
if one of your frenz said.

" yeah in London Bridge we gunned the towel-heads down even if they were surrendering hur hur hur just like we used to do in Iraq back then. Pity one didnt survive so we could pull his finger nails out like they do to George Clooney in Syriana!"

then in an ensuing enquiry a defence of
"we didernt! - they werent! it was all a joke!
and we mentioned finger nails because we DIDERNT pull them out not because we er did!" may not go down well

just a thought from a liberal
//It is understood a white woman who overheard the joke reported it to officials at the University of Oregon//

Says it all.
