Would he have still been thrown out if he had been a muslim and said gay marriage was against his religion ? I somehow think not.

Don't doubt it for a minute, SP. But the OP was speculating whether two equestrians - one Christian, one Muslim - would receive the same "respect".

What do you think?

It's easy for me to understand that this fundamentalist nonsense is cobblers, but what about the 12 year old kid trying to come to terms with who they are, and are faced by this?

Children need to be protected from this kind of rhetoric. It is damaging.
//He doesn't have the right to attend Sheffield University.
Nothing to do with free speech.
If he want, he can shout anything he wants online, but he doesn't have the right to attend the university if the dean of admissions sees fit.//

The dean is punishing a man for an opinion, SP. What's more he's damaging this man's career. This meets my definition for (a) bigotry and (b) malice.

I really don't know. It's like the Christian bakery thing. On AB, we got a barrage of "What if it were a Muslim bakery?"

I've seen a video (from the US) where 'customers' tried to get a Muslim-owned bakery to make a cake celebrating a same sex wedding. The customer was turned down...but here's the problem...it was not persued.

This is the issue I have here. This 'What would happen if...' question could easily be answered by some of those asking.

Just do it. Take a Muslim bakery to court.

Throw out any Muslim who posts anything negative about same sex marriage, but stop hypothesising, but we simply don't know.

...unless the answer to this is, "Well, nothing would happen, because we're pandering to the Muslims".

If that's the expected answer, then this whole thread is an exercise in playing the religion card.

I didn't realize that she was reinstated .
So , was she given a by on conducting gay marriages ?

Fair point at 17:26.

I understand where you're coming from.

I would just like us to get to a 'post-religious' society.

It would be a relief.
SP, the bible is dangerous to children and the vulnerable in more ways than one. Homosexuality isn’t special in that respect.
Regarding your last post, SP, don't you think that there is strong, if anecdotal evidence that Muslim sensibilities are accorded more respect than Christian ones?

I'll give youi an example. Remember "The Lifer of Brian"? Anybody about to make a "Life of Mo"?

Remember the Charlie Hebdo cartoons? Anybody get to see what caused the deaths of twelve journalists on the mainstream media?
Oops, I meant your post of 17:26, SP. I think my joints need oiling.

I would say it is more about the nature of the course he is on and the job prospects at the end.

A social worker can hold any opinions they like. However they do have to show they are able and willing to accept everyone's traits regardless of that.

It would be a bit like a (dam not even spellchecker can help me with this one) holucost denier wanting a job at the Jewish Museum.

I don't know whether you're old enough to remember, but 'Life Of Brian' was a huge issue at the time.

There were 39 local authorities who refused to allow the film to be screened on grounds of decency and for fear of contravening then active blasphemy laws.

Cinemas that did show it were picketed by religious groups, and the Pythons – John Cleese, Michael Palin, Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam – received death threats.

Now someone has mentioned it I remember ' Life of Brian' was controversial. I saw it in London, there were people standing outside the cinema asking you not to go in as it was blasphemous. Just made me more determined to see it.
SP at 22:26, no one was killed though, were they, so a poor comparison to Charlie Hebdo.
Social media has a lot to answer for - if this bloke hadn't spent time letting the world know his every thought like countless millions of others he wouldn't be enjoying his moment of fame. Who would have thought that doing this could bring problems? Duh...
When he is a Social Worker will he listen to his clients? Or will he be fiddling with his phone?
Youngmafbog said: Because they play the race card Mickey.
I'm sure it's already been pointed out that Islam is not a race. I CBA to read the thread because yaddah yaddah yaddah.
So no Youfartarseinthebog - it's alright to call you that because you insist on calling Mikey Mickey - you are not right. A muslim can't play the "race card"
I suspect the muslim would have been treated just like anyone else under British law. That's what makes our laws so good. Once they are pointed out to the judges and lawkeepers they apply to everyone...except MPs, mostly tory ones, obv.
Quizproquo, //I CBA to read the thread because yaddah yaddah yaddah.//

.You would have been wiser to read the thread – or even the OP - before launching into your ‘ yaddah yaddah yaddah’. This isn’t about British law. It’s about Sheffield University’s decision to throw this man out because of his beliefs.

//A muslim can't play the "race card"//

No, but ~Muslims frequently succeed in playing the ‘religion card’, and that’s what the OP refers to.

As a self confessed atheist, you voice much criticism towards the Bible and it's teachings, God, and Christianity.

Yet you never criticise The Koran and it's teachings, Allah and Islam.

Care to tell us why?
sp1814

You are just stating Biblical teachings written in a long past age, as you and others often tell us the world has moved on since those times, but the teachings of the Koran (which you also never criticise in such a way) are still carried out in this the 21st century.
Seeing as the world has moved on, what's all this guff about marriage equality being sinful?
