My MIL is from Europe and is terribly racist, its is so embarrassing at times how she refers to minorities, I have actually walked out on her.

/// In common with YMB, you are attributing a viewpoint to ichkeria that he has not stated, so you can argue with him about it. ///

Once again you are being confrontational, I am sure ichkeria can speak for himself.

And for your information I was not arguing with him, I leave such matters to you, being that you are the expert on arguing, even if it is on behalf of others.

You were also wrong, ichkeria did state that Eastern Europe people are more xenophobic and racist.

Therefore I think that I was quite in order to take him up on that particular statement, perhaps one could say on behalf of the none xenophobic and racist Eastern Europeans residing in the UK?

I don't know in which country you live but the UK is a European country, but if your MIL is from another European country, but lives in the UK, she herself is classed a minority.
Here I am answering for myself
Andy was just pointing out that "xenophobic and racist" was an observation, and not name calling.
As for your conclusion on the subject in hand, you may well be right, but just to summarise what I said before
a) there are other considerations to take into account as
b) this is not a particularly scientific survey or exhaustive survey
(to say the least). Not sure it does the Independent a lot of credit as a matter of fact.
Yes I know that AOG!!

Thank you for that and quite a good answer it is.

But just to pick you up on a minor point it was not I who said it was name calling.

Pewh! it was a good job that it was not a right wing paper's article then. :0)
ichy; if you want to know why there are fewer in the south it's because they have had centuries of invasions by Muslims and have fought, resisted and removed them, and they are not as naive as some of the northern countries which have welcomed them and are now wishing they hadn't.
Start with the first one on your list, Hungary, and look at its history vis a vis the Ottoman Empire.
You and Andy should swot up on your history a bit before making fools of yourselves on t'internet, ichi.
Using the terms xenophobic and racist is tantamount to name calling since they are both used frequently on here to describe and put down people who are proud of their nation.

Perhaps if some on here stopped using them as a whipping stick when they dont have much of an argument then such mis-understandings might not occur.
YMB - //Using the terms xenophobic and racist is tantamount to name calling since they are both used frequently on here to describe and put down people who are proud of their nation. //

I would suggest that is a somewhat distorted view of the truth.

On the (seriously rare) occasions when an actual mention of racism directed at a specific AB'er has been posted, it has vanished very quickly, deleted by whomever with the power so to do saw it first.

I cannot recall anyone who is proud of their nation being accused of being a racist on that basis alone.

// Perhaps if some on here stopped using them as a whipping stick when they dont have much of an argument then such mis-understandings might not occur. //

That is something that would need to be addressed on a case-by-case basis - again from my experience, any perceived bullying or abuse is dealt with as swiftly as is practical.

To be fair to YMB I don't think that he is referring to those names being aimed at fellow ABers.

There are many of the Left's political opponents that these types of insulting words have been used against.
I suspect there was a reason for them choosing those countries. I just couldn't work out what it was :-)
"ichy; if you want to know why there are fewer in the south it's because they have had centuries of invasions by Muslims etc etc"

Dear oh dear.
Ottoman rule in Hungary ended centuries ago, and even at its height was hardly the IS caliphate.

(I think someone is trying to succeed where Hasek failed, btw ;-) )
-- answer removed --
No, I am not claiming bullying or abuse, where on earth did you get that from?

I have no problem with it if thats how people want to debate. The only problem comes when someone really means it but readers dont know it. Due to all the misuse of it previously.
ichi; You really do need to bone up on European history. The blood shed by Hungarians fighting back Islam is legendary and why today Oban is so resolute in ensuring what is happening in most of Europe will never happen there.
Regarding Greece, (which is 'south' in case you are uncertain) from 1453 with the fall of Constantinople until the revolution in 1821 Greece was under the rule of the Ottoman Turks who controlled the entire middle east, and the Balkans as far as the gates of Vienna.
BTW, The Ottoman Empire collapsed during World War 1.
Their memories would indeed have to be legendary go back that far. They weren't fighting "Islam" specifically though, were they. The Ottoman empire largely, in any case did not try to convert people to their religion by force (some Christian communities actually benefitted as it put a halt to the grisly sectarian strife and persecution of "heretics")
I would just reiterate what I said before twice: we don't really know why this seemingly random survey has produced the results it has. Or even if there is anything to be gleaned from it.
AOG can fly his kite about holy wars, you can bang on about the Otrtoman Empire etc and I can make some tentative suggestion that the fewer Moslems there are in a country the more people are likely to be suspicious of them.
It keeps us all amused :-)

ichi //The Ottoman empire largely, in any case did not try to convert people to their religion by force (some Christian communities actually benefitted as it put a halt to the grisly sectarian strife and persecution of "heretics")//

Would you please give some examples of the benefits to Christian communities gained by living under muslim sharia law, (Christian sources only)
Because they have more sense?
