It was a good result for them: this is a safe Tory seat where they were more or less obliterated last time round.
I have already addressed the issue of Labour not winning yesterday. The much more important question is why did the Tory vote half in 18 months ?
Mikey, that's already been explained to you. The turnout this time was half the turnout last time.
Mikey, in fairness, as alreadty pointed out above, the turnout was half what it was in 2015. Of you look at percentages the Tory vote only dropped a little.
The Lib Dems actually incrwased their vote, slightly!
Labour, and it pains me to say it, instead of battling UKIP ended up only just fending off the Lincolnshire Independence Party (God knows ...?)
Ichkeria....so if Labour had polled an extra couple of points yesterday, what difference would it make ?

The right-wingers on here would still have been crowing that Labour lost, in a Tory held seat.
Well yes true Mikey but I don't care about them. I do care that Labour honestly look doomed
Mikey, Face it. Labour didn't just lose .... it bombed.
Ichkeria....there is every evidence that Labour is going through relatively bad patch....that cant be denied, but don't get carried away. They are not doomed because of one not-helpful by-election, any more than the Tories are deep in the sticky stuff because they lost last weeks by-Election in Richmond.

Let the right-wingers on here do their own hyperbole....don't do it for them.
**The right-wingers on here would still have been crowing that Labour lost, in a Tory held seat**

Not something you would do with a Labour win then Mikey?
//The right-wingers on here would still have been crowing that Labour lost, in a Tory held seat//

Really? Not everyone is like you.
Mikey, the Tories did not field a candidate in Richmond.
Mickey, it is more than a bad patch. If labour is to improve you, and other labour supporters like you, need to open your eyes and look at what is happening and why. if you dont you cannot correct it and things will only get worse for labour.
Danny...yes you are right....

the Tories didn't field a candidate in a previously safe Tory seat, for some strange reason that they haven't explained, and consequently lost the seat by default.

Richmond before by-Election Tory....... Richmond after by-Election Libdems. Its perfectly clear to me that they lost the seat.
This by-election isn't really good for anyone.

Conservatives won, but they lost 7000 votes.
UKIP half the votes of 2015.
Libdems added 100 votes, not much to celebrate there
Labour 4th, a disaster, but not really their kind of seat.
Gromit.....yes, I agree but its only Labour and myself that is getting it in the neck this morning !

Where are our resident UKIP supporters today ?
//Conservatives won, but they lost 7000 votes.
UKIP half the votes of 2015.// Gromit

//It was half what it was because the turnout was half what it was. Go figure.// Jackdaw .........before Gromit's reflection. Some people really don't read previous posts.
Togo,
I have seen the result so I do not need to be told that the turnout was down. My point is that although the Tories won, they lost a lot of votes, so it isn't wonderful.
Labour lost a similar number of votes, but they started with less so that was enough to dump them into 4th.
The percentages that some are so fond of seem not to be useful on this one then?
Gromit, sometimes you do talk an awful lot of rot.

Mickey, Labour are getting it, in most media, becasue they came fourth and Tim nice but Dim has come ut saying the Libdems are now the opposition not labour.
Is this an appropriate heading for this thread?
