Ummmm, it may well have been her shift. Nevertheless, I don’t believe the question of whether to allow her to present the item or not wouldn’t have been considered.
She's a news reader. She was reading news. Why should she not be able to because of her religion?
>No, this is England, not Pakistan. (first post in the thread, from davidsmall)

Isn't it shown in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland too?

David- do you mean we shouldn't have Asian/Muslim looking presenters or that they should be allowed on provided they wear outfits approved by the EDL or some other custodian of the English way of life
I agree with Naomi.

This is Ch4 we are talking about.

And I fail to see the connection with Black presenters, as far as I know Black people have never called a 'jihad' and death to the West?
Does anyone on this thread watch C4 news?

If she regularly reads the news no problem. If she doesn't then it is understandable why questions are being asked.

So ... who watches it?
Naomi - //Andy-hughes, //And what 'questions' could they possibly be?//

Haven’t you read the link in the OP? //

Of course - how could I make a reasonable comment without knowing what it is I am addressing?

//Is that really how your mind works?//

That’s a bit personal. Is this you playing pseudo-psychoanalyst? //

It's not me 'playing' anything. As I said, I am genuinely curious as to why you would question the religion of a newsreader, of which you may only be aware because of her dress - when any other religion, apart perhaps from Hasidic Jews - are not so easily identified (targeted?) in this way.

I didn't see the item, but I would not have wondered about the religion of the newsreader, it simply would not have crossed my mind.

I suggest it would not have crossed most other viewers' minds, had it not been for the 'issue' raised by Mr McKenzie, who is paid handsomely to do such things - although I note that this morning, The Sun has distanced itself from his odious observations and taken the tweet down.
Andy - I don't think I would have even noticed the scarf.
Maybe this is left wing propaganda but this says

"Having worked at the TV station for four years, she occasionally appears on screen to present a news bulletin. Her news stories include consumer stories about NatWest and Apple, as well as daily headlines on subjects like cancer, care homes and drugs."

I am not sure how often 'occasional' is as I rarely watch it, but she certainly isn't wheeled out just for Muslim stories.

ummmm - //Andy - I don't think I would have even noticed the scarf. //

Nor me!

But then - I am not a right-wing agitator paid five figures to go looking for trouble where none exists!
Yes, I watch Ch4 news these days, at 20:00, rather than at 19:00, due to changing work patterns.

Fatima Manji appears from time to time, just as other presenters and newsreaders do. Who knows the religion, if any, of Cathy Newman, Gary Gibbon, Siobhan Kennedy, Jon Snow, or anybody else ?

Here is the statement put out by CH4 ::::

The comments published in The Sun today by Mr MacKenzie are offensive, completely unacceptable, and arguably tantamount to inciting religious and even racial hatred.

"It is wrong to suggest that a qualified journalist should be barred from reporting on a particular story or present on a specific day because of their faith.

"Fatima Manji is an award-winning journalist. We are proud that she is part of our team and will receive, as ever, our full support in the wake of his comments."
You would have noticed if you watched C4 everyday.

Just like the deleted American cops thread everyone on this thread seems to have jumped on one side or the other without caring about any facts.
Good for them!
Talbot - //Just like the deleted American cops thread everyone on this thread seems to have jumped on one side or the other without caring about any facts. //

I feel I have to absent myself from your blanket generalisation - I have not 'jumped' on any side - quite the opposite, I have merely asked why there is any question to answer with regard to the faith of a newsreader in terms of the content of the news she is presenting.
What "facts " Talbot ?

There is no story here, other than one about MacKenzie trying but failing to stir up trouble.
I have read your posts and I do include you, andy.

Clearly you had no idea if this woman presented the show once, twice, three times a week or had fronted four times since 2003
So do you have a view on why they used her, Talbot?
Talbot...it doesn't matter how often she has appeared this year or any other year !

Not sure why you can't understand that ?

What religion do you think is Krishnan Guru-Murthy for instance ?

According to his Wiki entry, he is a Hindu. Would that prevent him from reporting about anything that is happening in India, for fear that he might be biased ?
Talbot - //I have read your posts and I do include you, andy.

Clearly you had no idea if this woman presented the show once, twice, three times a week or had fronted four times since 2003 //

I am not sure that this is relevant to the argument, although I do not dispute your point.

If it was transparently obvious that Channel 4 had trawled its newsroom staff to find a convenient Muslim woman and popped her in front of a camera so the world could see her wearing her hijab and presenting an item about Muslim terrorism - then Mr McKenzie would have a point to raise.

But the fact is, this lady is a news presenter, and appeared on screen for reasons that none od us - Mr McKenzie included - can be privy to, and they may include her simply being rostered on the day. We can only speculate.

But in the absence of any facts to the contrary, the notion that it was in some way inappropriate for a Muslim woman to present a news item about Muslim terrorism is frankly barking. It is looking for controversy, and stirring up racial tension, if not hatred.

The Sun is feeling the heat on this (no pun intended) - it has distanced itself from Mr McKenzie's odious posturing, and deleted his nasty tweet - so maybe they realise that he is looking for trouble.
You would have thought that after the debacle over its Liverpool comments, MacKenzie would be a little more careful, but it appears that he has learned nothing.
So do you have a view on why they used her, Talbot?

It is not that difficult to find out why, FF

Fatima Manji
And to those asking, yes my presenting tonight was long planned - had thought it might be a quiet Friday, instead very tragic
