Certainly sounds like it, despite denials...

Well it turns out the Coup in Turkey was just a Chicken coup the Islamist stay in control.
It looks like the coup has failed, but its a bit worrying when this happens to a NATO member.
Should we be preparing to offer sanctuary to the many who will be fleeing brutal military repression if this succeeds?
Looking at the map, we don't seem to be next door to Turkey, so no.
Mikey,
There have been military coups in Turkey before during their NATO membership. It made no difference.

Talbot,
The power struggle in Turkey isn't about Islamists and non Islamists. While the military are staunchly Secularists, and Erdogan's party isn't, that is not the issue.

SandyRoe,
No one will be fleeing, seeking sanctuary here.
Gromit...you are certainly correct about the Islamic issue, although I am sure that will be plenty of people who will blame Islam for what nearly happened
last night !
Mikey,
The plotters are undoubtedly muslim, and so is the Government. Whichever way the coup went, the result would have been Islamists running the country.
Well, whatever led to it, it appears that this coup attempt will have served only to strengthen Erdogan's control in the long run. I wouldn't be too surprised if he imposed harsh measures on those who led the (apparently failed) attempt to seize power -- but the problems of Erdogan's rule that will have had some part in the tensions that led to the coup attempt remain, and I hope they don't get yet more acute as he might look to consolidate his position.

They're considering the re-introduction of the death penalty, the mere mention of which ironically will sound the death-knell to their supposed absurd proposed membership of the EU.
The fighting between Marmaris and Icmeler - I had my honeymoon in Marmaris in a beautiful hotel called Marmaris Palace. Can't be
Live this is happening there : (
////For the record, I predicted this a month ago.

// Turkey is well on its way to being an Islamic dictatorship.

Sadly, The army may have to step in to stop mad Erdogan. Democracy is being undermined, he is arresting the opposition, closing newspapers that disagree with him, jailing writers and arresting military officers.

Turkey is about to be hit with an economic crisis. Tourism, which accounts for lots of jobs and earnings has failed this year. Putin ordered Russian tourists to holiday elsewhere after the shooting down of a Russian jet over Syria. They have obeyed and stayed away in their millions. Likewise British, German and Dutch are not going for fear of migrants, dead bodies on the beach, or terrorist attacks.
By the Autumn, Erdogans core vote will have crumbled, but the opposition have been neutralused. A military coup will save the country. //

Gromit: Sat 18th Jun 2016 ////

Errrrrmm, whoops!
Why 'whoops' ? It's all come true.
The military coup failed to save the country ... is it therefore ***?

How come a poster with an avatar 'stand with Turkey' has little interest in this thread?
Bizarre!
That doesn't make any of what Gromit said untrue. A failed coup is a sign of how desperate some have become with Erdogan.
I don't think I've ever been present when someone completely disengaged with reality.
Scary but oddly amusing too.
Ha ha If you mean me Talbot believe it or not I was watching the telly at the time ;-)
Additionally I wouldn't exactly call myself an expert on the country and I am not sure what I would have had to say on the matter
Altogether now: 'Yes I know that doesn't seem to have stopped others lol'
I've been reading this story but haven't seen anywhere why there was an attempted coup?
Talbot,
I predicted a coup, sooner rather than later. The fact that the last line was wrong because the coup failed does not make the prediction 100% fulfilled. But I was spot on with most of it.

According to the BBC, nearly 3000 soldiers and 2,700 Judges have been arrested. I can understand the soldiers but that many Judges ?
