the writer of the letter did so in a personal capacity. the article does not make clear how much (if any) support the letter was given by the official EU commission machinery.

I assume it was a personal daft decision too; but there again, as you say, the info isn't there to show how much approval was given behind the scenes, knowing that it could plausibly be denied.

Er, you voted for your local politician. You can see them at their surgery and try and change their views. If they don't follow their views you can even protest. This is democracy-of the usual kind at least.
