If we all pay a little, in taxes for example, we could support a lot.
//with the certainty of being returned if their claim fails....//

but "their claim" won't fail, because it will never be tested. they will vanish into the black economy, to join the army of sub-minimum wage nannies, child minders, car wash operatives, gardeners, office cleaners, security guards, etc. and the government are happy for this to happen because there are many successful businesses that are only successful because their business model is based on employees like this.
sandy,
Feel free to give every single penny you own towards their upkeep, we already have gangs of them controlling drug supply in jails.
I'd rather see my taxes going to help homeless ex Servicemen and cancer sufferers, but hey-ho.

///If we all pay a little, in taxes for example, we could support a lot///

And the additional costs, Housing, Medical Care, Schooling etc?
I've worked all my life for a secure future for me and mine, why on Earth would I want to support a bunch of workshy illegals?
I don't want any of my taxes going to support them.
It's up to the authorities to return those who can't establish a legitimate claim for asylum. Those that can could find work and be an asset rather than a drain on our resources.

And before you start, if they had something positive to offer us they would present themselves as such, not try sneaking across The Channel on a glorified Lilo.

In order for the authorities, whoever they are, to return them, they first have to find them.

BBC news has just said that there were twenty men on the boat, two of them British. It also reported that two weeks ago seventeen Albanian men were found in a boat off Chichester, and two men from Iraq (I think) arrived by boat on the south coast recently. I'm sure I heard it right - but it's the first I've heard of it. Has it been kept quiet?
Question Author
I've found something on the Chichester report:

With all due respect to Practical Boat Owner, does this news not warrant further coverage?
Not when the referendum is so near, naomi.
Question Author
You could be right, Tony. Isn't that disgraceful!!
Isn't that disgraceful!!

Not surprising though.
Talking about your referendum, do you think that Merkel is referring to you in this article when she says: "...pure nationalistic thinking and behaviour that would throw us backwards."?
Most probably, stuey. Not that I take any notice of what she says anyway.
Isn't it nice to see Germany and France united in a common front to protect Europe?
Question Author
Mamyalynne, thank you for that. With news concentrating on boats arriving in other areas of Europe I’m astonished that news of it happening here has attracted so little attention.
