I had to listen to a long diatribe from a couple yesterday, about immigration.

They come out with all the usual racist and xenophobic drivel....all these foreigners taking our jobs, changing our way of life, smelling of curry, etc.

This is in a small village in the Neath Valley, with nary a non-white face to be seen.

They both had well paid jobs, both with the local authority. But then they said that they were so fed up with all these foreigners, that they were in the process of emigrating to Australia !

When I gently pointed out, that when they arrive in OZ, THEY will be the immigrants, they said............."oh but that's not the same at all !"

Hypocrisy is a word that comes to mind !

Talbot - //But you are right....I occasionally meet racists like these and I do have to put up with it. It must be very difficult to be forced into hiding your views & principals. I'm not sure ... in fact I am sure ... I couldn't do it. Why do you 'have to' put up with it? // Putting up with unpleasant behaviour is often part of living in a modern society - and as Mikey has...

Why did you feel compelled to point it out 'gently'? They don't sound like idiots to me.
Naomi - //They don't sound like idiots to me. //

If - as Mikey says, they were holding forth about foreigners taking our jobs, changing our way of life and smelling of curry - then I would suggest that they appear to be racists, and one of the primary qualifications to be a racist, is that you need to be an idiot first.
Could make a sequel to a film there Mikey:

'What Lies BeNeath'
But it's not quite the same.
andy-hughes, 'if' being the operative word.

They sound like ignorant hypocrites to me Naomi.....dissing immigrants but intending to be immigrants themselves, and economic immigrants to boot !

I also pointed out that there are already millions of foreigners in OZ, so if they hate foreigners so much, migrating across the other side of the world may not be such a good idea.

My nephew has lived in Oz for a few years now, in Brisbane and there are lots of Asian nationalities living there, and very nice it is too.
I bet they all speak English, Mikey.
Naomi - //andy-hughes, 'if' being the operative word. //

I only qualified by statement with the word 'if' because I was not present, and cannot comment on what was said from a position of authority.

That said, I have no reason to doubt the veracity of what mikey is saying - and would not wish to confer any doubt on his statement as being a truthful account of what he heard.
Mikey, I think the issue is "tying to change our way of life / custom / Laws, I'm sure any place in the world would not bow down to any form of Immigrants the way the UK Does / Has, Would other country's supply Interpreters? allow the law to be challenged? I do not think it the UK Population that's at fault, it's the Weak ( Any Governments ) by letting the immigrants using the ACE CARD.

I can assure everybody that what these people said was exactly that. They were just spouting naked and rabid racism.

But my central point remains. These people were extremely critical of economic immigration, but that is exactly what they were intending to do themselves.....become economic migrants........hypocrisy in motion.
The percentage of folk in Australia who were born abroad is more than twice the rate for the UK (28% v 13%)

You don't half glean a lot of information from people, mikey ... do you carry a bright light a chair, some duct tape and a rope around with you?
So this couple both have well paid jobs but they are off to Australia to be economic migrants?

lol lol
Mikey, in fairness, when these people emigrate to Australia, it’s doubtful that their impact upon the country will be noticeable. Can you see the difference?
Question Author
Naomi...fairness didn't come into it. The spiteful bile that this couple came out with was painful to listen to. If I hadn't been present in a professional capacity, I would have got up and left. I hear this sort of ignorant racism quite a lot these days, but this was the worse for a long time.

As someone has pointed out, they both had jobs, so the only reason that I could see is that they wanted to get away from foreigners, is that they found then to be personally objectionable. The area that live in is very pretty and almost 100% white, so I'm unsure why they were so incensed about foreigners, smelling of curry.

Nearly a third of Brisbane's current population were born overseas
( 29.7% )............considerably more than the Neath Valley !
Talbot - //So this couple both have well paid jobs but they are off to Australia to be economic migrants? //

What about the possibility that they are moving to Australia because they are taking up better paid jobs?

That would indeed fulfil the criteria to make them economic migrants.
Perhaps they're sick of seeing their country and their culture being systematically destroyed.
^That was to Mikey.
