Stupid nonsense!!
Reads like it's the University rather than the HSE but I agree daft ruling.

You'd think they would back their decision with concrete evidence of the past injuries they mention.
I hope they ignore it - and I wonder what punishment will ensue if they don't? They can hardly be thrown out!

Haven't seen a mortarboard about QUB. In a long time. I think they were banned years ago. That seems sensible to me.
This would not be a problem at a traditional university as graduating students do not wear mortar boards. This seems to be limited to ex-polytechnics.
jackdaw, not so - although I think it's optional in some universities.
I love the hat-throwing photo of my son's graduation from last year. Lovely scene and great memories. A shame to stop it.
It is not an ex-poly, btw, Jackdaw.
They certainly are not worn at Oxford, Cambridge or Durham, only by staff.

You could have someone's eye out with one of those things !
I still have my gown and hood from graduation but have never worn a mortar board, even on the grandest of occasions.
Good business model for someone then , a range of foam rubber mortar boards.
I never wore one for my graduation although I think i might have carried one. I now wish I had worn it for at least one photo.
At my school and at the one where I taught only the Headmaster had a mortar board which he never wore but carried with him on state occasions.
A cap in the eye can cripple. A beret from behind may startle. Now...a fez.....
I had a mortar board, plus I carried all my stuff in a hod.
