Oh dear! It would have nothing to do with the much larger contingent of counter-protestors would it?

Naomi, that was exactly where I was coming from ;)

I seem to recall a few defectors to UKIP from the Tories too.
ag, I thought it might be. ;o)
mikey4444
Talbot...you would support the BNP ? Really !

Well, at least you have been honest to admit I suppose.

And as you can see, he also cherry-picks. Using half of my post to try and make a spurious claim.
Using mikey logic he must be a supporter of radical Islam. (maybe it is the ingrained misogyny that attracts him)
Question Author
Talbot, yes, I did correct him about that!
Question Author
Andy,

Thanks for your comprehensive reply. At least you haven't ducked out so credit where it's due.

I'll absorb in more detail later.
"I'll absorb in more detail later."

I really wouldn't waste your time.
Question Author
Orderlimit - fair's fair. What debating is all about?
The question put to andy-hughes was //Do you agree with Mikey's assessment of the "fascist" threat?//

His response seems to be 'yes' ... or then again it could be 'no'.
Orderlimit, if someone takes time to compose an answer on a thread you are involved in, then it is only right that it should be read whether you agree or disagree with the content.
Absolutely, sorry all .
Question Author
Talbot, I agree. There's been far too much unnecessary confrontation on here of late just because of conflicting viewpoints.

No need for it to get personal.
Naomi, I don't think 'influenced' equates to real world power.
Question Author
Andy > My perception is that all these ‘fascist’ organisations achieve fare more media coverage than their either merit or deserve. It is utterly disproportionate to their value, or effect on society as a whole, since they are largely highly vocal...

Take Pegida for example across Europe, would it be wrong for the media to highlight the growing support and angst irrespective of whether it is merited or deserved as you put it?

Zacs, //Naomi, I don't think 'influenced' equates to real world power. //

No, it doesn't. Nevertheless organisations like these wield more influence over the general public than we give them credit for. UKIP might have only one seat but 4 million people voted for them.
How can they exert influence when that doesn't turn into votes?
And that doesn't turn into seats in parliament to enable their policies to become realities?
Orderlimit - //Absolutely, sorry all . //

Thank you - very much appreciated.
ag - //Take Pegida for example across Europe, would it be wrong for the media to highlight the growing support and angst irrespective of whether it is merited or deserved as you put it? //

I think there is a line to be drawn between reporting the news, which is the news media's raison d'etre, and whipping up a fear factor that is not merited.

I have noticed over the last ten - fifteen years, that our media has followed the American lead, and used its position to become a harbinger of doom, when facts and evidence do not bear out their prophesies.

Remember 'bird flu', 'death of the bumble bee', 'GM foods' - and so on and so forth?

These media campaigns can lead to utterly disproportionate anxiety and fear in society, and that cannot be a god thing.

So of course they should report issues, but that should be tempered with a sense of realism, rather than an eye on circulation.

Andy > These media campaigns can lead to utterly disproportionate anxiety and fear in society, and that cannot be a god thing.

Absolutely not a god thing! ;)
Question Author
Andy, but nevertheless, it cannot be denied there is growing concern and angst throughout Europe irrespective of how the media portray the situation do you not think?
