Actually AOG is (partly) correct here.
Knife crime has seen a very small rise (2%) in the past year, according to figures released by the ONS in July:
[i]The Office for National Statistics said the 2% rise in all knife crime offences in the 12 months to March marked the end of a downward trend in the previous four years but the total remained more than 50% below its peak six years ago.
The increase to 26,370 offences was announced ahead of a new “two strikes and you’re out” mandatory prison sentence for repeated possession of a knife or blade coming into effect on Friday. More than 1,000 extra offenders are expected to be jailed every year under the measure.[i]
I think that knife crime *is* taken seriously, but I don't agree that a first offended is the way to go. I think the 'two strike' solution makes more sense.

A better start would be for EDDIE51 to get his facts right, the link he rushed out in a failed attempt to prove me wrong, was regarding crime in general.

In areas where there is known to be a high level of gangs and 'gang warfare' then perhaps it would not come amiss for a few periodic individual searches to take place, if only to dissuade some from carrying offensive weapons on their persons.
