How Do You Feel About The Sudden Rash Of The Tricolour?

I've noticed this on Facebook and now here on AB.

I had a conversation with a colleague about this today, and both of us feel uneasy about it, both find it difficult to express exactly why.

I felt the same when suddenly loads of friends on social media slapped the rainbow flag over their avatars when America ratified equal marriage.

What are your thoughts? If you haven't changed your avatar, do you have reason, or is it just something you've not thought about doing?

You have to introduce colour into everything.
yes I have a reason -I'm half French and have relatives in and around Paris and spent many happy times there.
I am in total sympathy with the Ftench people but I have exactly the same reservations as you.
And like you I am not sure why I do
I have 138 Facebook friends and when I last counted 25 had 'twibboned'
I think what might be behind my reluctance was the claim made by the authors that we would be 'helping' in some way. Which seems like a slight exaggeration
But to be serious, it is all a matter of respect for those who died in Paris, just the same as most of us in Britain observed the one minutes silence at 11am this morning.

the Rainbow thingy isn't the same at all.
The rainbow 'thing ' is the same as the tricolour actually it's about standing up and showing respect for your fellow human being!!
of course it is Isaly - respecting people murdered while going about their daily lives is totally the same as celebrating same sex marriage
I am fine with it as long as those that adopt the "said emblem" do not berate those who have not adopted it.

"of course it is Isaly - respecting people murdered while going about their daily lives is totally the same as celebrating same sex marriage"

The two are linked by the use of an emblem to signify unity.
Randy -so by that you are saying the 'rainbow' logo has the same meaning as the 'Poppy' ?

Your Afro would look nice with a Blue, White and Red rinse.

I hear what you're saying, and to an extent I agree. One (tricolour) is about mourning and the other (rainbow flag) is about celebration.

But both are a symbol of solidarity in one form or another.

Again, I want to stress that I am in no way attacking or denigrating those who have changed their avatar...I am trying to get an understanding of why I feel so weird about it.

For example - I observed the minute's silence today, and I thought that was wholly appropriate and was pleased that my company joined in with it...but the avatar thing doesn't feel the same.
Difficult to put into words really , why do I amend my avatar at different times of the year in response to all manner of things?

I imagine it is a bit like wearing ribbons or bracelets , an outward symbol of one's feelings - I would never berate anyone for not doing so though, that would be crazy.

My post just now was in response to your comment at 15:03.
Are you suggesting that the poppy is worn to respect people murdered whilst going about their daily business?
My Avatar is to respect the three days of mourning in France. I don't expect anyone to feel pressurized into doing it , nor be berated for not doing it.
Randy -I'm not turning this into a childish argument so carry on by yourself.

By the way - I think we should leave the poppy/rainbow flag issue by the roadside.
sp1814 yes I realised that -thankyou.
You started it Retochic and no one berated you.
