I was surprised to read that In Germany, just 25 per cent of people said they felt ‘only German’ and not European, and 36 per cent of people in France feel ‘only French’.

/// Says "Halifax" on my birth certificate. I am very proud of that. ///

Says "Halifax" on my bank book, and I am very proud of that.
Always a Tyke.
like sp1814, if someone asks me where I'm from I say London. England's nothing to me; Europe slightly more. My DNA comes from three continents and I'm happy with that.
It does not have to be one or the other. We are both.

British and European, in that order
England's nothing to you jno - do you live here ??
I said I was a Londoner (outer Londoner really), viv. But I'm not English.
Are things so bad, AOG, that you're flying a distress signal?
But the place you live in means nothing to you - why ??

/// Evidenced by the fact that when I'm on holiday, if I'm asked, "where are you from?" I always answer London. ///

/// This is normally because in Europe, because of my accent, I'm often mistaken as American (apparently the south London accent is, to certain ears) similar to the accents you hear in New York, I'm told). ///

Are you sure it is only because of your accent?

And by that I am not being rude or even racist.

I say that because I once knew an Indian person who took much offence when asked where she came from.
Scottish, British and thats it.
I am Scottish first, British second but don't really think of myself as European.

Whatever tags I pick to describe myself I am still me.

I get distressed with many on here, but what is your point?
sp1814 is Indian? With an Afro? No wonder I get confused.
"I couldn't help but say to [Mr. Gorbachev], just think how easy his task and mine might be in these meetings that we held if suddenly there was a threat to this world from another planet. [We'd] find out once and for all that we really are all human beings here on this earth together." ~Ronald Reagan, 1985

Not English, not British, not European, since I don't suppose you are a complete 'displaced person' please tell us what you are?
1. Lancastrian,
2. English.

And I think that's quite enough.
I am English first and then British. Never European.
jno

I get that feeling from most Londoners, I will chip in for a fence round the M25

See my just giving page 'Fence of London'
English, Specifically a Londoner although I haven't lived there for more than 40 years.
