The Royal Navy rescues them and transports them to safety in Europe, they make their way to Calais, and we then make all efforts to keep them out of the UK. Somewhat confusing....

/// One boatload were picked up six miles off the coast of Libya. What are the Royal Navy doing patrolling the coast of Libya? The people trafficers now only need the flimsiest of craft. ///

Yes if they have water-parks in Libya, all they have to do is to hire a peddle-ho out for a hour, 'peddle out' and off they go on their 'jollies' to Europe.
youngmafblog - what on earth has the size of my house or how much tax I pay got to do with anything? I'm not advocating everyone in the UK adopting an immigrant. That analogy was there to show the attitude of some people when describing of the plight of these people -you know -humans born of woman?. If we were not in the EU the matter would be sorted overnight -closed borders -close the blinking tunnel all together. AOG made a good point -this has to be addressed in country of origin,Africa, but that's a much harder task than changing laws in the UK .
Just because someone has sympathy for the plight of other human beings doesn't mean they think they should be let into the UK. Getting a bit bored of saying that now!

///this has to be addressed in country of origin,Africa,///

here we go again,

Africa is not a Country it is the world's second-largest and second-most-populous continent.
The Labour government in 2003 proposed safe havens: "In an effort to reduce the number of applicants, the Labour government is proposing that immigration officers at ports of entry intercept asylum applicants and send them to safe havens outside the UK administered by UNHCR for six months; asylum seekers could leave the camps to return home. After six months, those still in safe-haven camps would be screened to determine if they are refugees in need of protection, and some of those recognized as refugees would be admitted according to a quota system to the UK.

The UK would like to establish regional protection zones along transit routes and near the applicants' countries of origin, Source; Migration News.

It still sounds a sensible and constructive proposal to me.
Baldric - I meant 'countries of Africa' but could not be ar*sed to correct it.

Don't worry, I've done it for you!
;o)

/// And before the 'you must be a liberal tree hugger' comments come out, I actually support UKIP. ///

Then why not agree with Nigel's suggestion about setting up reception centres in Africa to separate the real refugees from the economic migrants?
Thanks Baldric, you can be my official 'corrector' as sometimes I really can't be bothered with punctuation either ;-)

Gee thanks, (I think)!

I typed my response before I read your 10.18 post.
AOG - Farage's idea would never happen in practice as there is far too much corruption in those countries. IF it did happen then all EU countries would have to have a presence in these African countries and agree to take the same amount of immigrants and some just can't cope economically with the people they have already got. In Farage's world we would be OK as we would no longer be in the EU and only allow people into the UK who can add something to the economy -like USA,Canada and Australia have been doing for years.

Let us not make it up as we go along. This is not about letting people drown – it’s about our Navy off-loading its rescued passengers in Europe and hence exacerbating the problem we and the French have in Calais. Surely the most sensible solution would be to return the people back to their port of departure.

This response to anyone calling Africa a country is all getting rather boring, we all know that Africa is a continent, one doesn't need a degree in Geography to know that, referring to it as a country is just a simple terminology.

And did they ever implement it Noooooooooooo!!!!!!

///we all know that Africa is a continent,///

Really, we seem to have at least a couple that don't!

Who could disagree with that?

Why can't the politicians agree that this is the best solution, instead of trying to gain 'Brownie' points from the rest of the World at the expense of it's own citizens?

I have already explained that it is a mere figure of speech, why the need to set yourself up as some kind of geographic expert?
What if these immigrants have no passport or identifying papers, would their country of origin take them back, would they want them back?
They interviewed the Sudenese illegal on News at Ten who was rescued by boat in Italy. He made his way through Europe by whatever means possible. He said 'England is good, they look after you'. He has nice accommodation all paid for and free meals. He is also given an allowance once a week for essentials. Asking him what he wants in the future he said 'I want to improve my English and bring my family to England'. and there lies the problem, we are not just housing these illegals, along comes Mummy, Daddy, Nannie, Grandad, sisters, brothers in fact anyone of their extended family all on the gravy train.
