How cool is this guy ...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-33741380

Every year, he takes part in the Pride Parade ... on his mobility scooter !!

He carries a banner saying " I'm the oldest gay in the village".

In the past, he has been given a criminal conviction for being gay. This weekend, he married his BF, to coincide with Pride Weekend.

That's the way to go when you're in your 90s!

// And at the end of the day - who bemoans the excuse for a street party? //

Good point, sp.

And it's such an amazing street party.

Is there a bigger or better street party anywhere in the country? I doubt if the Notting Hill Carnival even comes close.
JJ^^^ you mean the straight men OR the straight women?
One other point - if people are to be encouraged to keep quiet about their sexuality, then surely it follows that they should keep quiet about their political allegiances?

I mean - for many people, that's an entirely private matter ("It's between me and the ballot box")

Perhaps all party conferences should be held in private?

The LibDems could hold theirs round my mum's house. She could move the knitting machine out of the spare room for them.

Actually, she probably wouldn't need to move it.
actually 3 per cent of straight women did report having it with you, JJ, but a D Notice was issued to stop anyone mentioning it.

damn
I watched the video, and it appeared to be really windy that day in Brighton...Almost as windy, in fact, as it is on here:)

/// It's about balance. If a section of the community is made to feel like a minority, ///

Excuse me Andy but surely in this case they are a minority?

/// and is castigated and criticised and ostracised for its lifestyle, then its natural reaction is to react with exaggerated pride and positivity - to make an extra point about being what they are, that society is
against. ///

Perhaps while they constantly go on about it things won't move forward, one cannot expect everyone to be forced to accept their lifestyle (incidentally I would have put sexuality, because 'lifestyle' gives the impression that it is one that is chosen).

/// It has to be a nice opportunity to enjoy a strength-in-numbers celebration, when you spend the other 363 days of the year living with casual, and often overt homophobia that, although it is hundreds of times less than it was in previous generation, is still alive and
ill. ///

Congratulations Andy at being the first one to introduce 'HOMOPHOBIA' into this debate.
It's a friggin day for Gods sake!!!! Absolutely no impact on your life whatsoever. Stop thinking about Gay sex.....and think about Disney films....or jelly and ice cream (as my mother said when I had a nightmare)
As long as there is any kind of perception that not being heterosexual is something to be ashamed of, or to hide, or to feel that you have to be discreet about it, then Gay Pride events are needed.

In this particular man's living memory, his sexuality led to him being treated as a criminal. I should think that's justification enough to stand up now, and say that he is proud of who he is, and people should take note. If nothing else, because that Gay Pride events can even happen with few people really being bothered by it shows just how different things are, even if there is still some way to go before nobody cares what your sexuality is.
Umm... perhaps thinking about jelly won't entirely take your mind of gay sex, though :)

/// AOG...you quite clearly disapprove of Mr Montague and his marriage, hence your remark about "broadcasting" It is your right to disapprove of
course. ///

Will you please cease putting words into my mouth that I have never said.

It is false interpretations such as you constantly make that causes much of the ill feeling on this site.

If you can't win an argument without inventing things that other posters have never said, then be a gentleman and withdraw from the debate.

Lol, Jim, it has to be jelly and ice cream....and sprinkles if you have them!
AOG - ///// It's about balance. If a section of the community is made to feel like a minority, ///

Excuse me Andy but surely in this case they are a minority? //

I think you are nit-picking here AOG. I think you are fully aware of the difference between being in a minority, and being singled out and vilified for being in that minority - and that was the point I was making.

//Perhaps while they constantly go on about it things won't move forward, //

Constantly? I suggest you move to where I live AOG, I have only ever known of one GP march, and I think even you can cope with one day a year!

// one cannot expect everyone to be forced to accept their lifestyle (incidentally I would have put sexuality, because 'lifestyle' gives the impression that it is one that is chosen). //

Point taken about the use of 'lifestyle' - I don't think any gay person wants anyone to be 'forced' to accept their lifestyle, but maybe they need to be forced into understanding the concept that a different lifestyle does not mean a wrong lifestyle which is to be mocked and criticised.

// Congratulations Andy at being the first one to introduce 'HOMOPHOBIA' into this debate. //

I have no idea what that means.
I notice in Israel an Orthodox Jew attacked a Pride march. He stabbed a young girl to death. I think he's been arrested. If he'd been a Palestinian he'd probably have been shot.
Congratulations to the happy couple!!

/// "44 percent of straight men report having anal sex at least once in their lives, and 36 percent of straight women do too." ///

That either means that 8% of straight men have had homosexual sex, or 8% of women won't admit to it. //

I think it means that 56% of straight men, and 64% or straight women.

Please explain your confusing mathematics?
Could a percentage of those 'straight men' have bottomed? Would that explain the discrepancy?
"Now, if you marched through Moslem areas, that would make some sense to me. Hell, I'd come along and join you. (if you wanted me, that is)".
Yes, me too (not that I can see many gay marches taking place in Dewsbury or Tower Hamlets any time soon).
Of course, we all know that the activist bullies and their supporters in the education system and local government ALWAYS back down when they're confronted by more determined bullies:
http://archbishop-cranmer.blogspot.co.uk/2008/04/muslim-fury-forces-schools-to-withdraw.html
I liked "Cranmer's Law" from this article:
"It hath been found by experience that no matter how decent, intelligent or thoughtful the reasoning of a conservative may be, as an argument with a liberal is advanced, the probability of being accused of ‘bigotry’, ‘hatred’ or ‘intolerance’ approaches 1 (100%).”
