Togo....I agree with most of what you say, but I still don't see why, or how we should spend billions on renewing our existing weapons. I make the point, again, that the vast majority of nations on the planet seem to manage quite well without them.

It should be remembered that nuclear weapons have only been used twice before, and on both occasions by the Yanks.
Well it needed someone to test the water first.
Pretty horrific result wasn't it. So much so that the race to build had to be counter acted. It is a sort of Insurance policy now.Useful and wise to have but hope you don't need it.
Absolutely Mikey - I have always thought that the amount wasted on nuclear missiles was an immoral abomination - they should be scrapped tomorrow.

To return to AOG's OP - I think Labour are terrified of Mr Corbyn because he represents a past they would rather forget - the days of Foot and Kinnock - both totally unelectable because of their policies and personalities.

They have only just come to terms with how unelectable Milliband was, and now they are faced with a leader who will take them back two generations.

If I was a Labour MP, I'd be very scared as well!
Ha ha mikey. That's OK then. At least we can mull the question over on AB. Just glad you haven't got em sometimes
I'm just curious about the need to spend so much on renewing our nuclear deterrent. Do nuclear missiles deteriorate ? If so how long do they last whilst being stockpiled ? Could we just renew once every 10 years or so ?
Ron...Its the delivery system, rather than the missiles themselves that are going to be renewed. In other words, we will need some new nuclear submarines, hence the huge cost.
What price the freedom and security of the country we live in? Shall we denude ourselves of the capability to defend ourselves from those who retain a nuclear arsenal. How else do we defend ourselves at the moment. We have precious little else? Shall we become another Ukraine? Do we rely on NATO,the US to bail us out.Why has France retained nuclear weapons and why shouldn't we?
R-cop...what about that long list of countries that I gave earlier, that don't have nuclear weapons ? How do they protect themselves from the small amount of countries that DO have these weapons ?

We are not the Ukraine nor anywhere near Russia. Why would Russia want try to invade Britain ?
Mr Putin has heard about the benefit system & wants in.
You may argue the pros and cons of nuclear arms, renationalisation of various fractions, but Andy-Hughes has said it in a nutshell. Without getting into government, none of these aspirations with ever come to fruition and will the British public elect a left wing party?
They might.................can Labour take that chance?
We are an ICBM easy reach strike from Russia. Russia via Norway is straight into Europe. Why do we have a dwindling BAOR still. Why do Royal Marines train specifically in Norway? What is your alternative defensive measure for the UK?
Some berk said we didn't need to re arm and re equip an airforce back in 1938-39 and our friends in Germany were happily doing it in order to take over Europe. They tried twice. Why should we weaken ourselves so Russia can have a stab at it? Do you believe they are a non-belligerent nation?

Yes. Sorry aog. I am taking your post off Topic. Thanks sqad for reminding me of that.
mikey; //Why would Russia want try to invade Britain ?//
They don't and wont, but that is more than could be said for some -so called- Islamists, should they get hold of some.
The truth is that any country using a nuclear weapon on another would be removed from the face of the earth in short order.
/// Is He The Left's Nigel Farage?///

Subtle difference, one likes Guinness and the other McGuinness.

Apparently, they can deteriorate. Allowing for the fact that this article is 30 years old…

Labour are not going to win for at least the next 2 general elections anyway.
We may as well have a candidate that stands a chance of regaining some of the Scottish seats Labour lost to the SNP.
R-cop...I still can't see why Russia would want to attack or invade Britain ?

Russia is most definitely a belligerent nation, as Ukraine is finding out to its cost. The Baltic states may be next on Putin's list, but I can't see that Britain is in danger.

Sqad is probably correct about Corbyn. All I have suggested is that some of his policies may not be unpalatable to the people of Britain as it seems.

There are millions of people that voted for Labour in May, and there will continue to be millions. But if Labour remains as a light-blue version of the Tory Party, as it has over the vote of the Budget, then they might as well disband. The Party in general and Harriet in particular completely beggered up the recent Commons vote. No wonder people are confused about what Labour stands for !

Labour needs to show that it has real and different policies from the Tories, not just oppose everything dave and Osborne does. The whole purpose of having Corbyn in the Leadership contest, was to stimulate a real debate in the Labour Party and where it goes from here.

Maybe it needs gingering up !

Eddie ...what evidence have you for saying that ?

dave only has a working majority of 12. In 1992, Labour were in a better position than in May, although not by a huge amount. And yet, 5 years later, in 1997, Labour swept to power in a massive landslide, putting the Tories into opposition until 2010.

Its not all over for Labour, not by a long chalk.

/// I note that Corbyn has, amongst others, two policies that might prove popular with many of us here on AB, and the nation in general......namely the renationalisation of the railways and energy companies. ///

/// Axing Trident seems like a great idea to me ///

There you go, just as I implied, telling some what they want to hear, now do you see the connection with Nigel?
