At the risk of answering a question with another (apologies Bathy) but I'm hoping Eddie may elaborate.
Would the mother in this case be at more risk from the prison service itself? Do private thoughts for some get in the way of professionalism? Not intended to be a sleight on prison workers integrity but I noted Eddie's use of inverted commas.

agchristy,Prison officers are human they don't mind looking after robbers or even murderers . But like others they HATE child killers or child sex offenders.
They often have to risk personal injury to protect such people from attack by other prisoners. Sometimes it all gets too much and they either by mistake or ''accidently'' allow such prisoners to be in a position where they can be attacked. Remember a prisoner who is already on a life sentence has little to lose by attacking another prisoner. They can't add to the sentence it's already 'life'. In fact they have a lot to gain as other prisoners will give them gifts of tobacco, sweets or food as a reward for hurting someone they all hate.
All this is why I smile when I hear people saying that someone who has committed a particularly nasty crime ''Should get the death sentence not prison''. For such a person a death sentence is infinitely preferable to the perpetual threat of death or injury in jail.
Ian Brady has been begging to be allowed to commit suicide for decades, there is no way they are going to allow him to do it. He is such a high profile prisoner that a suicide by him would mean a huge investigation. They just want to let him suffer for as long as possible. Other less known prisoners can be classed as a 'suicide' with little or no risk of investigation.
Prison punishments short of death include razor blade/broken glass in food, ball point pens in the eye,and 'napalm' a mixture of boiling sugar and water being poured over you. The 'napalm' causes very bad 3rd degree burns far worse and more painful than ordinary burns as it holds a lot of heat and sticks to the flesh.

I am opposed to the death sentence, but because there have been many thousands of innocent people executed for crimes they did not commit over the years. Most of those were too poor or badly educated to afford a good defence team or understand what to do to defend themselves. It is an unfortunate fact that in the USA the huge majority of those found to have been executed for a crime they did not commit were poor ,black and badly educated or illiterate.
