I am in no way apologising for his drinking, self inflicted of course and let us not forget he was not the only person in this case to be awarded damages.

Should those payments have been made? I have no idea - but equally should be Press be allowed to encroach on one's every move and phone call?

// Imagine ... having your private life gone in to publicly //

Is Paul Gascoyne, who has lived his entire life on the front (and back) pages of the tabloids, and in books, suggesting that he is not accustomed to having his private life gone into publicly?
I am not sure if Mobiles had been invented when he had his first drink !

Such a great talent, completely wasted.
It's not about his first drink or being photographed out on the town - it is about this case. Or indeed any of the other people involved.

No, they absolutely should not.

But it's just silly to try to exaggerate the consequences.
So, we should all be accepting of the fact that if we ring or voicemail our family and pour our heart out about a personal problem - it's up for grabs?

I'm sure everybody on here would be just fine with that.
Maybe he meant that for a while thereafter he felt no enthusiasm to resist ?

It was, mikey.

A sad waste of an enormous talent.
JJ - thank heavens you have no experience of Mental Health issues, I envy you.

When you are at your lowest , even a light bulb blowing can send you down further than you can imagine.

Mamya ...

Up to a point, I agree.

But some of us would pour our problems out to our friends or family.

Others, like Paul G, pour them out to the public in an autobiography.
I cant prove it but Id lay money he was advised that he had a good chance of making money from this..and thats exactly what he has done....

what else he chose to tell is not relevant. By your analogy, someone who has multiple sexual partners can't complain when they are raped.

Hang on, I'm just trying to think that one through ...
//But some of us would pour our problems out to our friends or family//

He did!! On his phone, which had been hacked, so when what he had said appeared in the Media, he thought (in his low mental state) he was being betrayed by those he trusted.

This is like treading treacle.

You've persuaded me.

I've changed my mind.

Your OP contradicts itself, JJ.
If I remember rightly Paul Gascoigne was accusing his family and friends of leaking stories to the press, so obviously this phone hacking contributed to whatever problems he had.

Mamya, I believe this was also true of many other people who were hacked: they thought those they trusted were selling stories about them to the press. (I think Elle Macpherson sacked her innocent PA for this reason.)

mikey, if you think his talent was completely wasted you know nothing about football whatsoever.
