I'm interested in going to Greece next year and want to see as many historical sites as possible. I don't mind island by day but any one any idea where would be a good base, as I would prefer to come back to one place!

There are so many islands, i have no idea where to start! I want a half beach/half site seeing holiday!

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Sorry, not very well worded there!

I meant i don't mind Island Hopping by day!

DOH!

I haven't been, but I guess Crete would be a good start. I expect there are plenty of Minos-related sites there. However, it's a bit isolated for island hopping!
While staying in Zante a few years ago we took a day trip Olympus to see the site where the Greek Gods originated and the site of the original Olympic Games. Not much on Zante in terms of historical sites unless you count the shipwreck. Kefalonia is also a possible day-trip.
