Why would the Police want to know the names of people who have read Charlie Hebdo ? I buy Private Eye on an irregular basis...does that mean that I am on a Police watch list as well ?

If you read the article, you would know the 'leak' was actually a letter to the 'Guardian'.

quite big, ichkeria

Press TV should certainly know a thing or two about state surveillance (!)
just the first link that came up - the story was widely reported elsewhere. After all, when you're spying on the prime minister, why would you think anyone else was above suspicion?
'targeting suspected EDL operatives in the area" - didn't realize the EDL were a banned organization?
jno and ichkeria

Another link. Hardly surprising that academics might appear on MI5's radar screen.

I'm pretty sure any 'subversives' would have the sense not to subscribe. Although.....

No you can't ask the newsagent. He was found decapitated in his shop when the newsboys and girls arrived in the early hours to start their deliveries. One of the shaken boys said he was passed by a bearded man on a camel but police have dismissed this evidence.
Shouldn't the police be watching the subscribers of Serial Killers or porn mags for starters?
I'm not following the argument in your 13.44 post retrocop, does that mean anyone who went to Cambridge shouldn't be trusted either?
Oh dear, I'm in trouble when I get back then. I managed to get my 'survivors' copy and we are proudly bringing it back along with a copy of the local paper which detailed all the 'silent protests' in the Vienne, with photos. Guess who is in the front row of our local one? (They know me and shoved me there to give in international dimension!)
^^^ 'an', not 'in'.

I am suggesting no such thing. I provided a link to go with another provided link which mentioned that MI5 were targeting academics. The word Cambridge and 4 academics who studied there are linked with spying and espionage in this link and was obviously, that at the time, MI5 considered it to be a nest of spies and recruiting ground for Russia. Nothing for you to get uptight about. Really.
It merely demonstrated to jno and ichkeria why academics were of interest to MI5. I hope this hasn't upset you too much.
not uptight or upset at all thanks retrocop, just asking

so the bit about the decapitated newsagent wasn't literally true either then?
Arrr. Yes I have to admit to a porky there.how did you find out?
I am sure that pp's post re Little Happens is gospel though! :-)
mikey, they're after the Welsh too!

More than just one rogue cop trying to make sure this freedom of speech thing doesn't get out of hand.
I don't get it. Buying a mag from a newsagent is not the same as having a subscription (unless it was a regular order?)
I don't think anyone much in this country subscribes (even in France its circulation is pretty small), but a lot took it this once because of the publicity, or to take a stand for freedom of speech - and the police want to know who they are, it seems.
-- answer removed --
I'm no expert but, if I was the sort of person who pigeonholes people, then I would stick people who had likely never hear of this mag prior to the massacre but then ordered a copy of the special issue, into either

1) Magazine collector. More interested in value years hence than in actually reading the things.
2) Hipsters, trying to be 'edgy' to impress a potential partner.
3) Genuine '**ck you' personality types, who don't care who they offend, by what they say or do or put on display.

The latter could, potentially, fit the 'troublemaker' mould and thus be worthy of monitoring. Eins, zwei.
