we already have the ridiculous situation at horse guards parade that the "guards" have to be guarded by armed police.

The troops at Horseguards are on ceremonial duties. These men in France were on a different kind of duty.

I'll try to speak to people tomorrow to gauge their reaction to this. The populace as a whole was completely knocked off balance by the Charlie killings, but you heard 'terroristes' rather than 'Muslims'. There was definitely a shock-wave which shifted perceptions though.
