Why Would Anyone Take Along Knives To A New Years Eve Bash At A Golf Resort, Or Even An Axe To A Devon Pub?

Six people stabbed at a top golfing centre and a man was killed in a knife and axe attack during a mass brawl in a Devon pub.

Time stop and search exercises were more widely introduced along with stiffer sentences for anyone carrying such weapons.

We had a guy who came in to our office and he had an axe with him.

People are odd - apart from us that is ...........
A man carrying a knife in a pub in Plymouth, nothing new there!

A golf club, a little more unusual.
Perhaps the knives were already there. A few years ago I attended an air show and after searching my camera bag they removed a small penknife. Entering the marquee at lunch time, I noticed on the tables were long steak knives, all potential weapons.

Then again there are plenty on here who have a special axe to grind. :0)
Average behaviour for a Devonian, AOG.... We Cornish have to be way of them - and they eat their jam and cream the wrong way up on their scones....

Because they are violent morons. If they didn't have knives they'd be smashing beer glasses and using those instead.

The problem with expanding the stop and search protocols is - how much is acceptable?
the event organisers have robustly denied there were any such stabbings at their event at the belfry.

What I mean is - in order to prevent such attacks, or even to reduce the likelihood of such incidents recurring, the current net would have to be thrown extremely widely.

I don't think that is sustainable, or even practical.
I think if I owned a pub and wanted my customers to feel safe, I would have security on the doors at all times and metal detectors set up on all of the doors, to detect for any weapons.
Lostsouls....unless they serve drinks in plastic glasses / bottles then almost everyone has a weapon in their hand.
True Ummm, I guess you can only do so much to keep the violent types from hurting others.
And then you have pool cues/balls. Often the damage is done before the bouncers even know it's kicked off.

There was a big kick off in Northampton a few weeks back where 6 people got stabbed and others injured. Approx 60-70 people involved. Absolutely nothing bouncers could do about that.
local gossip is that it was between two guys & the one went there with the intent of attacking the other - not that, that excuses anything & i hope he gets sent down for it, but perhaps it wasn't the mass stabbing it's being made out to be

but that isjust local gossip. (belfry is sniffing distance away)

you can stop and search as much as you like but if someone is intent on harming someone they will find a way, as ummm has already said pubs/bars already have weapons in the way of glasses/bottles, pool cues & balls
A friend, waiting for a train with her 86 yr-old mother, took a small fruit knife out of her bag and began to pare an apple (Mum couldn't manage the skin). She was instantly pounced upon and told to put the knife away or be thrown out of the station! World is barmy!
