Forget those who would wish the words England or the English to be no longer mentioned, 2015 is the year of the English, so forget the British and even the Brits.

Are we really to celebrate being pushed into the sea by the Germans at Dunkirk 75 years ago?
Always remember, history is written by the victors.

If you don't want me to put down words that you say you didn't say, may I suggest you don't say them in the first place.

/// That is hardly comparable with a monster force intent on subjugating the entire world a piece at a time, in which case everyone, including me, would fight to defend those hard-won freedoms against an invading enemy like the Nazis. ///

Then how do you feel about Islam's 'monster force' which is the modern Nazi threat, will you be prepared to fight against them?

And isn't this what the EDL is protesting about, (the rise of Islam in England) but some would prefer to dismiss as racist, they are not the best by any stretch of the imagination but they are all we have got at present, I hope we don't leave it too late for an alternative.
Nous allons voir......

In short, yes - http://www.adls.org.uk/t1/upcomingEvents
Do the EDL even know what they are protesting about...?

Stop confusing ISIS and the Taliban with Islam and that might be a good start, AOG. On your logic, and given the IRA and all its spin-offs, you should be condemning all the Roman Catholic Church. I haven't seen any evidence of that but then I may be mistaken.

Well it seems from some of these answers that we have not many who are truly proud to be English.
I think the problem is that your definition of "truly proud" seems to include wilfully ignoring anything in our history that doesn't tally with a "glorious English" view of things. If that is indeed the case then I don't want any part of that. But despite all that I am, in my way, proud to be English.
Sometimes, AOG, you come out with such total baloney that almost makes me not want to be associated with the English if this twisted logic of yours represents the majority. On the other hand, it is, indeed, quite laughable and entertaining to read such trash, almost as good as any Jilly Cooper novel. Tally Ho!
Yep, out have flushed out the anti English AOG.

No real surprises though, usual suspects.

AOG - "AOG - "If you don't want me to put down words that you say you didn't say, may I suggest you don't say them in the first place."

Please point out where, in my original post, I said " ... and its should be open to all those not so fortunate ..."

I did not say that, you know it, and I know it.

This makes nonsense of your response quoted above.

Feel free to apologise for your adding onto my post, and putting words in my mouth, and we can move on.

AOG - "Then how do you feel about Islam's 'monster force' which is the modern Nazi threat, will you be prepared to fight against them?"

Are you seriously drawing a comparison between IS and The Taliban, and The potential Nazi invasion?

Are you?

Seriously?

"And isn't this what the EDL is protesting about, (the rise of Islam in England) but some would prefer to dismiss as racist, they are not the best by any stretch of the imagination but they are all we have got at present, I hope we don't leave it too late for an alternative."

And are you seriously putting forward the EDL as a credible response to the rise of Islamic extremism in this country?

This is the EDL we are talking about here remember, and you think they are 'all we have got'?

I am stunned!
Jim - Oh these English Fog Horns that we have to contend with on here and it's not even Feb yet. Think I'll stick to being a pro-Brit.

Ever country have some things that have happened in the past of which they are not proud, but they don't go out their way to broadcast it to the world.

This thread is about the things we should be proud of, a true patriot doesn't go out of their way to find the negative things about one's country, leave that to our enemies.

/// Sometimes, AOG, you come out with such total baloney that almost makes me not want to be associated with the English. ///

Then that has only got to be good?
The problem with that is that finding the negative things about a country is the first step towards fixing them. So no, I don't agree at all -- a true patriot, if such a thing exists, recognises and accepts both the good and the bad points about a country. And then sets about trying to fix the bad, rather than sweeping it under the carpet and crying "traitor" to anyone who says otherwise.

At any rate, pointing these things out is not, and should never be mistaken as, "anti-English".
twaddle, a true patriot has a balanced view of the achievements and legacies of his or her country's past and also an appreciation of its less finer moments and the lessons that can be drawn from them - otherwise we risk repeating the same mistakes again, and that includes having such bigoted monotheistic views of society, such as the EDL et al possess, not the pluralism that society can offer.
Read what you want, AOG, but read it carefully, what I wrote is laced with conditionals.....
