I read an article Monday that reported the Pope as calling on political, religious and academic Muslim leaders to "clearly" speak out in condemnation of those who kill in the name of Islam. Has anyone seen any reports that those leaders have proactively embraced this wisely suggested opportunity to rebalance the disastrous PR they routinely produce?

Apart from the first answer, I do not think the pope SHOULD HAVE to ask Bar, If the Muslim Leaders wanted to try an end this Murder / violence, they should have spoken up before now. " But Will They" that remains to be seen!
// The news agency Reuters reported him as saying that it was wrong to become “enraged” by Islam because of terrorist acts.
“You just can't say that, just as you can't say that all Christians are fundamentalists. We have our share of them [fundamentalists]. All religions have these little groups," he said.
He revealed: "I told the president that it would be beautiful if all Islamic leaders, whether they are political, religious or academic leaders, would speak out clearly and condemn this, because this would help the majority of Muslim people.”
"But this must come from the mouths of their leaders, from religious leaders, academic leaders, intellectuals and political leaders.”
He empathised with Muslims who reject a predominantly Western association of Islam with terrorism.
He added: “They say: ‘No, we are not this, the Qu’ran is a book of peace, it is a prophetic book of peace. This is not Islam,’" //

Seems reasonable. Of course muslim leaders know that the terrorists do not represent them, so it does not occur to them to denounce every terrorist act. The Pope seems to be saying they need to be more vocal to educate not to bright westerners, that not all muslims are terrorists.
Of course Catholic religion has been SO peaceful during its history.

Killing people who would not embrace the catholic religion, putting Galileo under house arrest because he dared to say the earth went round the sun, and how about the terrible behaviour of Catholic priests towards children that has come out in the last few years.

It says here that the Catholic church has paid out over 2.5 BILLION dollars in settlements against abuse by Catholic priests.

It always amazes me how so many people still follow such a corrupt religion.

The BBC wont show clips of Jimmy Saville on TV, yet are willing to give the Catholic church TV coverage.

The Pope should be ashamed of himself and his religion.

I think that it does happen (the condemnation from Muslim leaders), but it's just not that widely reported.
And this is an area where if you put your head above the parapet there's a real chance it might be lopped off.
lets hope people dont look too closely at the catholic church and its infamous past.....

im guessing theyve killed more people than these terrorists in just as heinous ways
If he expects them to adopt the same timescales as Pope condemning Paedophilia, we've got a number of years to wait yet.
I agree with the Pope here. We need every Muslim leader and cleric to condemn all these murders, and do it openly and often. I am fed up with moderate Muslims telling us that these killers don't represent "real" Muslims....the terrorists think they are being good Muslims, after all.

And we can start with Anjem Choudary ! If I see his smirking, clever-clogs face on Newsnight, Channel 4 News, etc once more, using his weasel words and NOT condemning, I might throw a brick at the telly.
I suspect the religious leaders keep quiet about the atrocities because it would just prove how little influence they have.
Vulcan...I expect that this lack of condemnation has something to do with the fact that these terrorists are being funded by rich Gulf oil states.
I eagerly await the Pope's condemnation of troops from a Christian country invading a Moslem country and killing in the name of God.
Yes there are some, but many dont.

100 imams, I wonder what % that is?
//educate not to bright westerners//

I might have guessd you would find some way to put down the West.

Have you considered moving to Russia or maybe Iran or somewhere similar ? You might be a bit happier then.
And the not too bright ones as well.

If we are talking 'educate', then not 'Too' bright westerners.

I wonder how much the Islamic religion has paid out in settlements for all their misdemeanour's over countless years?

Zilch would seem a good guess.

Not being a Catholic I have no reason to stand in their defence, but if we are to delve back into the history books instead of just concentrating on present day terrorism, then Islam were not standing by all innocent all those yeas ago.

Has a Pope ever asked for condemnation of those who do so in the name of Christianity? Where was the Vatican during the Troubles?
