Somebody's going to start the discussion, so as might as well be me!

I'm happy to support the idea but it's not something that I feel strongly enough about to join public demonstrations or write to my MP. Also, I'd prefer it to come about through national legislation, rather than leaving smokers to check individual rules for each park or public space that they visit.

"We know that alcohol-fuelled harm costs society about £21bn a year and are determined to reduce this burden to taxpayers. The rise in admissions is very concerning and we are taking action to tackle cheap and harmful alcohol.

Smoking is becoming less widespread, but it remains a leading cause of death and disease in the UK.

NHS costs are estimated at £2.7 billion each year, with costs to the wider UK economy of around £2.5bn in sick leave and lost productivity.

10x the amount from drinking than someone have a ciggie in a big open space, whats the bigger problem ?

Dave.

Do they not control the park for banned items then, Craft?
As a smoker, I have become accustomed to being treated as a leper, each place they ban it is another I won't visit.

If it stops smokers or reduces the number who start because they cannot visit the park or Trafalgar Square, who am I to argue.
at £12.3 billion per annum no government is going to ban it....Shame on them. I'm a smoker if they want to stop this then forget the revenue and just ban it. They wont.

And they say smokers are unreasonable, nice one!
webbo, if you want to discuss alcohol start a thread, do not try to divert the focus of this one. Why do smokers always do that?
Yes and if Tuvok wants to start a discussion about attacking people with petrol on the street, start a new thread too!

Why do non smokers get so violent?
they should spark up and chill out, mamya. ;o)
Smokers don't realise how strong the stink of stale smoke is - on their clothes, on their breath....

Do
Im not starting a new thread about alcohol TTT, Im just pointing out you don't get 10M people per year admitted to hospital due to smoking, as I said its very rare that a sober smoker beats the *** out of someone on a night out after smoking half a dozen cigarettes, but on the other hand someone who has downed 6 or 7 pints of stella, tell me who is more likely to cause someone else harm, someone having a cigarette in a big open space or someone that has had a skin full in a packed pub or nightclub, I know who I would rather bump into.

Dave.
Of course we know Tuvok and I do not impinge my smoke on anyone, nor do I need to use ludicrous violent reactions to get my point across.
I was quite amazed once when I passed the entrance to the oncology ward in Bristol Royal Infirmary and saw people outside having a quick ciggie who had obviously just been working among people dying of lung cancer. It appears that smoking is extremely difficult to give up even when you are all too well aware of the results.
perhaps webbo but that is not relevant to this discussion. you may as well talk about traffic accidents.
