Ukip are the extreme right wing of the Tory party, so why any Labour supporter would switch to them is beyond me.
-------------------
Well, given that in Heywood Labour went from a 6,000 majority to just 600 one would reckon that quite a few did just that, as well as a lot of Tories.
Or, given the turnout the previous Labour voters became apathetic to their party in the interim period from the 2010 election to their MP's unfortunate death.
mikey......LOL......good post.
However, the Labour party needs your support and vote now, as, as things are looking, they do not stand a chance with Ed Milliband at the helm, of forming the next government in any form that you can think of.

Clarion.......I don't know where you got that piece of information from:

\\Liz McInnes won for Labour with 11,633 votes which was well down on the 18,499 votes (40.1%) the late Jim Dobbin won at the 2010 general election.\\

But you are probably correct that Labour will hold Middleton at the general election.

AOG, The result at Heywood & Middleton answers your question.

Mikey, you “have been lucky always to have lived in Labour constituencies”, so why complain that the council houses surrounding you keep property prices low, as you did on another thread? I would have thought you’d consider low cost housing a good thing.
This result was against a low turn-out of 36%, so I expect Labour to hold this seat comfortably at the general election.

The Labour Campaign Manager last week wouldn't share that assessment! I can't find the footage but he was extremely relieved just after the result was announced and conceded it was too close for comfort.
Voting in a General Election isn't some game...its a serious affair. The end result is the only important thing to consider, not how we got there. All these looney-tune candidates can waste their deposit money and stand in elections if they. We live in a democracy and people can waste their money how they like, but don't lets pretend that its part of some greater good.

The Monster Raving Looney party used to make Screaming Lord Sutch a lot of money, as he used it for free (ish) publicity for his pop music concerts. But now that he is dead, I just can't see the point of their clowns standing for Election. They never, ever win and always lose their deposits, so just what have they achieved ?...begger all.

As for all parties being banned except Labour and the Tories....no, of course not and I have never, not would ever, suggest such a line. But the aforementioned parties are the only ones that can actually win, albeit with a little help from behind, by a minor party, once in a while.

Don't let Farage kid everybody that they are now part of 4-party politics.
UKIP still only has one MP and it had to steal that one. There are lots of parties that have more representation at Westminster than UKIP, that don't boast about "breaking moulds"

So people like Cloverjo should think about what party they want to win, and more importantly, what party they want to lose and vote accordingly.
Naomi...what a daft thing to say. I have never been ashamed of being a Labour supporter but that doesn't mean I always think everything they do as a good thing. But you have never thought that the Tories have ever did anything wrong I suppose ?
Why is it a daft thing to say? You said it. You vote Labour and you have to live with the result - which you're doing.
Sqad...have you changed your mind a bit lately ? I seem to recall that you thought that the most likely outcome next May was for Labour to win, either outright, or in a Coalition of some kind. All the Polls still think that, and so do the Bookies.

You and I understand that either the Tories or Labour will be in Number Ten next May, although there appears to be others on AB that have a different view. Let me make it quite clear that Mrs Farage will not be measuring up for new curtains in Downing Street anytime soon.

Naomi...I am most certainly not "living with the result" at the moment but I have every expectation of doing exactly that by the middle of next year !

By the way, were you ever critical of anything that the Tories did after 1979 ?
mikey....correct........my mind change has been brought about by the poor showing of both main parties in the bye-elections and the fact that Labour will not jettison their vote loser leader before May.

That "feeling" that i have.....
labour let the nation down far more than the tories have .so when it comes to the election the people should not forget that .Is theer still a monster raving lunny party or have they being ousted by the far middle .
So can we nail this down a little tighter Sqad ? I take it that you now think the Tories will win next year, with, or without anothers Parties help ?
( I promise I won't shout at you if you say yes ! )
//Let me make it quite clear that Mrs Farage will not be measuring up for new curtains in Downing Street anytime soon. //

in the elections of May 1928, the Nazi pary got less than 3% of the vote, and pretty much the same was being said about Hitler's possible occupation of the kanzleramt.
Mikey, where criticism is warranted I criticise.
Voting in a General Election isn't some game...its a serious affair.
---------------
But by advising people to vote tactically you are making it exactly that!!
And we know it's a serious affair. The rise of UKIP in the last 18 months means that a fair portion of the electorate are taking matters very seriously indeed, to the point where they've had enough and want their fears and concerns addressed by in-touch MP's, not a select few multi-millionaires telling us we are all in this together with their one extreme to the other mansion and bedroom taxes.
The electorate have had enough of hordes of illegals entering here uncontrolled, many with the express purpose of bleeding and milking the benefits system for all it's worth.
They've had enough of seeing us have to make cuts and forego wages increases on a yearly basis, whilst MP's have massive ones and we see more of our money thrown to countries in foreign aid, only to see them spend tens of millions on a mission to Mars whilst cancer patients here are denied treatment because of cost.
mikey........no i don't think the Tories will win outright........BUT........if in that 2-horse race and i had to put my pension on the winner (not necessarily outright), after a lot of trepidation and fingers crossed i would have to put my money on the Tories.

i cannot see, for the life of me, how a Labour outright win is possible.
