As predicted, Police all over the UK are now overwhelmed by the work involved in investigating child pornography. In this time of savage cuts to Police budgets, how will they cope with this hugely growing problem ? Children are at risk here, after all.

Of course it's feasible. Those who do it as part of their job, whether police, social workers, or charity workers, receive the appropriate training, and there's no reason why capable volunteers can't have the same. People aren't usually thrown in at the deep end as you were, andy-hughes. Take it from me.
I can read and deal with referrals of child sexual abuse for clinic; not entirely sure I need the accompanying visuals. However it would be something I would consider giving volunteer time for with suitable training. As jack has hinted, I'm not sure it would be a long standing commitment.

And who judges the volunteers?

I, and my colleagues were selected by Microsoft on the basis of evidence of our ability to handle such issues - but I would never in my wildest dreams have volunteered for such a task.

You run the risk of attracting anyone from the morbidly curious down to the vigilante and the pervert - seriously dangerous in my view.
The reason that the attachments to the relevant divisions are so short is that it was found that officers were found to be suffering from PTSD.
It's not as simple as glancing at the harrowing images. Each picture is studied in great detail to glean as much information about the child-victim, the abuser and the location.
These observational skills are developed over years of Policework and training......and most Police Officers wil have had to deal with very difficult situations in the course of their routine daily tasks.
To expect 'volunteers' to be able to perform the requisite tasks as diligently and dispassionately as any trained officer is, frankly, naive.

I am not at all surprised.

As I advised, my task was simply to locate evidence that a site was being used to send images for download, which only meant me finding one image, and then clicking off it and advising the address. That meant I saw the images I saw for maybe three or four seconds each, but that was more than enough to burn them permanently into my brain - as I advised, i can remember then clearly years later.

If i thought I had to examine such images in detail day in day out, i would, I am sure, be curled up in a ball in the corner sobbing by the end of the second day.

Volunteers? I think not.
There is no suggestion that volunteers become experts in forensics – simply that they carry out initial examination of computer hard drives. Do let us keep this in perspective.

There would be precious little time/resources saved if this was all the volunteers were tasked to do.
The 'fine detail' and thorough investigations would still have to be carried out by trained Police Officers.

Paedophiles are seriously clever and computer literate. Any hint that their sites are compromised - and that is what a simple check would do - and they shut down and move like they were never there.

In order to bring a case to court, the evidence of circumstances such as location and participants needs to be investigated, and you cannot do that with a simple glance.

I suspect that Jack knows of what she speaks, either by direct experience, of by knowing someone with that experience - I am inclined to take her viewpoint on this.
jack - we have cross-posted, but we appear to agree.
I thought we already had cyber-crime volunteers - the Iplods
andy-hughes //In order to bring a case to court, the evidence of circumstances such as location and participants needs to be investigated, and you cannot do that with a simple glance. //

A simple glance is enough to confirm that a suspect should be investigated further. As I said, do let us keep this in perspective.
A quick glance may be all it takes to affect you badly. You accuse Andy Hughes of not keeping things in perspective, naomi, but I suggest you realise the degrading, awful horror of the subject matter and the sheer scale of it.
hc, I presume you mean I don't realise? If so, you'd be very wrong.

It is - but it's not enough to collect necessary criminal evidence such as locations, identities of victims and perpetrators, which are required to bring a case that will hold up in court.

Perspective indeed.
'Volunteers? I think not.'

Andy, they already use volunteers so Naomi is right, it is feasible.
Orderlimit, perspective is thin on the ground here. Thank you.
Indeed Naomi :)

The National Crime Agency also use specialist volunteers for high end crime investigation and the Child Exploitation & Online Protection is part of NCA.

See attached link, obviously you would have to join the Special Constabulary at this level but that would only probably be to extend your powers.

Orderlimit, thanks for the link. I did say earlier 'take it from me'. :o)

divebuddy - "So that's game, set and match to Naomi, then."

Has there been a tennis match?

Have I missed it?

Pshaw!
