How many Scottish constituencies are there which currently have sitting MPs at Westminster? Recent press articles on the Scottish referendum have mentioned 70, 59 and 40 Scottish seats currently being held by Labour MPs. This all seems a bit confused - will some one shed some light, please.

Many thanks, ichkeria. You have certainly explained where the fgures 59 and 40 came from - 70 presumably came off the wall somewhere!
59 seats in all, and, most importantly, 58 of them NOT Tory. There are more Giant Pandas north of the Border than Scottish Tory MPs.
There used to be seventy-two Westminster constituencies in Scotland and when the Scottish Parliament was set up, it used the same ones but separated Orkney and Shetland into two meaning there are seventy-three constituencies in Holyrood.

The Westminster constituencies in Scotland were reduced to fifty-nine for the 2005 General Election.
