And to those who would be only too quick to criticise me as racist for posting this, just because of their skin colour I say this;

"It is not a matter of skin colour, but that of their culture, that most are appalled by".

There are those who might criticise you for being racist for posting this story. They may be wrong...but it leaves the rest of us puzzled as to why you posted the question, when appears you haven't read the story properly.

One has to assume that you have no agenda here...so...what was it in the story that lead you to assume this was both 'ridiculous and repulsive'?

Did you think they were going to consummate the marriage?

Where did you get that idea?
Interesting question sp

I recall aog once accused me of 'Political Correctness' because I referred to two women I know as being 'beautiful afro caribbean'.

that seemed odd as he had no way of knowing what they looked like.

In fact, the women in question are by any standards 'beautiful' and one of them, if she wasn't running her own business, would no doubt have continued with a successful modelling career.

To assume (without knowing them) that the only way they could be called 'beautiful' was through Political Correctness suggested a mind set in which there was an in-built assumption that no woman could be black AND beautiful.

That would seem to be a deep rooted racial prejudice.

Anyway, so far as this ill-judged thread is concerned, I suspect certain parties have retreated to the Allotment of Shame. LOL

Or start digging somewhere else? :-)

Well the apologist were out in force over this one.

If it had been a 62 year old white Tory Mp, or maybe a UKIP member 'marrying' a girl age nine, I wonder if these same apologist would be clambering to defend this ridiculous and repulsive practice, no matter what the intentions or from where the story came from?

'One day Mr Ukip MP would grow normally and have family of his own and get married one day, all this ceremony is for making his Party happy. We are playing.'
Mr Ukip MP and his bride did not sign a marriage certificate and will not be living together.
Both have gone back to their normal lives.

Still don't see too much to overreact to there.
Stories like this & the responses they generate make me chuckle. Other races & people have 'different' cultures to us, notice the word 'different'. Who determines that we are always right & of course other people who are not British are always wrong, disgusting, degenerate. Get a life.
But why would any parent allow their 9 year old child to take part in a ceremony like this ? I couldn't care less if its a "Cultural" thing...people were defending FGM up until recently, with exactly that excuse.

Has anyone ever seen Mikey and Aog in the same room?
Baldric...LOL !

Tell me, do you think its a good idea for a small boy to be "married" to a 62 year old woman, whether in jest ot not ? Would you put a son of yours through all this ?

\\\\Who determines that we are always right & of course other people who are not British are always wrong, disgusting, degenerate. Get a life.\\\

Well put Ron, unfortunately that is quite close to the definition of being British....best Health Service, best Educational System, best Judicial System.....it tends to get rather nauseating.

\\\\ Would you put a son of yours through all this ?\\\

Yes if I thought there was any foundation to it.....psychological or otherwise.
Thank you sqad, how nice to find one or maybe more on here with some semblance of common sense.

As it was a Traditional Cultural Ceremony (their culture, not ours) and there was no intention to consummate the Marriage or even co-habit afterwards, and given the fact he has been raised in that culture and was keen to do it, I see no problem, it is their way of life, not ours.
///Would you put a son of yours through all this ? ///
Well, no I wouldn't, but only because in this Country we are, as a whole, not big on appeasing our Ancestors, so I would see no need, however, if it were a Family or British Cultural Tradition I'd be there with my Top Hat and Tails.
But that's not going to happen, as stated, it is THEIR Tradition, not ours.
AOG

I am now confused.

Why have you mentioned the hypothetical Tory MP's race?

You stated that your question isn't about race, it's about culture.

And going back to your question - I still don't understand what you think is repulsive, unless you think they are going back to her house for a leg over.

That indeed would be repulsive.

However, if you had read the whole article, you would have seen that this was just a ceremony to appease their dead ancestors.

And let's not forget, you described Jimmy Saville's sexual activity as 'mere fumblings' at the height of the scandal, and in the great scheme of things, I would suggest that this story is way more innocent than *that* story.

Would you not agree?
