Yes, if he had been ejected from the Liberals, Conservatives or Labour, I would have said that was the correct decision, because these are moderate parties who are all fighting for the 'centre vote'. The whole point about UKIP is that they are the bastion of free speech, saying it like it is, and be damned with political correctness.

With that being the case, should they not welcome those whose views are (relatively) extreme?
sp, No, they shouldn't - not if what's being said isn't what they stand for - and hoping Africans will kill themselves is not what they stand for.
You miss my point TTT ! Of course other parties have their tw*ts as well. But UKIP has got into so many difficulties so often recently and I simply can't understand why Lampitt wasn't identified earlier, like before Wednesdays's broadcast for instance. As Gromit has pointed out, a cursory glance at social media sites would have made it abundantly clear what his views are. It isn't rocket science to identify such a self-evidently loony !

Its no secret that I am not a fan of Farage and UKIP, but they are continually being found to have their feet in their mouths. If Farage really wants to be taken seriously, then this sort of thing just shouldn't happen. Herding cats.
UKIP are likely to receive alot of 'protest votes' in the next elections. They want to be seen as more grown up party able to rule a country. Their right wing stance of opposing mass immigration and euro interference doesnt neccessarily mean they are willing to entertain fruitcakes.
But Booldawg...that is exactly what they are doing, entertaining fruitcakes !

This incident does nothing to counter UKIP's popular reputation for looniness, and Farage, despite what he says on my BBC News link, seems to be incapable of taking control of the situation, in any shape or form. He is allowing attention to be drawn away from the things that he wants to say, onto defending the indefensible. He will be asked questions today and the days following, not about UKIP's education policy, or health policy, or anything else important, but will instead be plagued by reporters asking why he let this fruitcake into his party and why he thought he was suitable to appear on their TV broadcast.

We all know that he has zero chance of winning the next General Election, but he should be thinking long term. Politicians are never remembered for kissing babies, but everybody recalls when they drop one.
yes gromit these came out, not sure why he thought it was acceptable. What I'm saying is that you cannot vet peoples private thoughts so there is always a chance that further down the line something like this can happen. So even if the parties developed a questionaire to try and guage a person the the whole exercise is futile. Perhaps they should all take this test:
http://www.politicalcompass.org/
and then only those in the bottom left hand corner should be allowed into politics, then the whole world can be fluffy bunny, weirdy beardy right on liberals and we can all knit some yoghurt!
Mikey, //UKIP's popular reputation for looniness...//

Are you sure that's their 'popular' reputation - or is it what you want to believe? There are an awful lot of people who like what Ukip are saying - and that's what scares you. If it didn't, you wouldn't bang on about them so much.
Tora

// there is always a chance that further down the line something like this can happen. //

But this wasn't further down the line.

The tweets were published last October. The offensive remarks were there for all to see BEFORE he was selected for the TV advert and Parliamentary seat. If he had made the comments after his selection I would agree the party couldn't have prevented a loose cannon going off. But the evidence that he was a loose cannon was there for all to see last October, and people making decisions missed it.
naomi24...I can assure you that UKIP does not scare me one little bit. If anything I am relying on them to make sure of a Labour victory in 12 months time. They have no chance whatsoever of winning the next General Election, which nobody can seriously deny. Anyway, I reserve my right to comment on anything in the news, as I am sure you do as well.

I am not sure what side you are on here. Are you defending Lampitt and his views, because not even UKIP are doing that.

UKIP have scored another own goal...are you denying that as well ?

Farage has been made to look foolish, which is some achievement as he normally needs to assistance in that department.
For "to assistance", please read "no assistance"...flipping typos !
Ok gromit fair enough didn't realise this was known in advance.

Without Googling - does anyone know the names of UKIP's leadership committee...apart from Nigel Farage?
No one can know what private thoughts are held by members of any party

Unless of course they tweet them to the world.
Neil Hamilton's something or other with Ukip now, not sure if he's a leader.
I live in the North West and we have a UKiP MEP called Paul Nuttall. I think he is a regional leader and may even be Farage's second in command.
Latest on Neil Hamilton's relationship with UKIP :::

Still Vice Chair apparently !
//right wing stance of opposing mass immigration and euro interference//

Since when has opposing mass immigration and being anti euro been a reserve of the right wing?

I know plenty of 'proper' left wingers that agree with policies of his.
Mikey, //I am not sure what side you are on here. Are you defending Lampitt and his views, because not even UKIP are doing that. //

You’ve not read my posts.

//UKIP have scored another own goal...are you denying that as well ?//

As well as what? UKIP haven't scored a home goal. They’ve done the right thing. They’ve booted him out.
Naomi

Thus UKiP member turns out to have tweeted some odd things. Those odd things have been in the public domain since last October. Yet he was chosen to front heir party political broadcast. Now his tweets have been highlighted, he has been thrown out of the party and the party has got some very bad publicity.

If that isn't an own goal, I do not know what is.
Keeping him in the party?
