I agree its always added on but never taken off !
the best town pub / bar to get value at is always wetherspoons
Like any retailer, they can charge what they like

prices aren't set by law.

the 1p off is a reduction in duty (tax) and they can pass it on at the till if they choose to, or absorb it in their other costings
Like Zeuhl says, they can charge what they want.

A fact, of course, Osborne was well aware of when he pretended to be a man of the people.
Go to Wetherspoons...good Real Ale, very competitive prices and on a Thursday they do a Curry and a Pint for £5.99, a bargain these days.
Osborne.... a man of the people ? Never heard such rubbish !
Yes, they can charge what they want for beer so it's up to them whether they pass it on.
I am puzzled as to why Osborne has again announced this 1p reduction in this way. I said last year it's better to say he's not putting it up than proudly announcing a 1p reduction- it's bound to attract ridicule and claims he's out of touch if he thinks drinkers will celebrate a penny off

Ken, I don't think that I can remember any chancellor of the exchequer that has been a man of the people.
Did you ever believe a publican would discount the beer by a penny. Get real.

In fact, forget the publican, did you ever think that the likes of Punch or the breweries would discount their product by a penny. Nope, no one in their right mind would.

Oh, for the joys of capitalism.
