/// Details of the tragedy emerged at Liverpool Crown Court as Emma was jailed for ten months after a judge ruled she was a 'caring and loving person' whose attack was 'largely outside her control.' ///

Oh so that's okay then, why even bother to jail her at all?

Seems she has even got the Daily Mail on her side, seeing that she is constantly referred to as Emma, instead of the usual usage of surnames that we see.

Will she inherit the family home, I wonder?
Aog, why have you missed the main point in your post about her mental health problems?

You have a point there Sandy.

/// Aog, why have you missed the main point in your post about her mental health problems? ///

There are many more criminals with mental health problems who are serving much lengthier jail sentences than 10 months.
I just read this, and thought to myself how sad it was.

I am, quite frankly, shocked at your lack of compassion :-(

There are different types of mental illness, AOG.
Another compassionate AOG post.

So if you run someone over in your car and they die would you expect a 10 year sentence?
// Kay Nolan, 45, struck Grandfather Stuart Mather, 60, who was out walking his dog, just seconds after pressing send on a text message.

The court heard how she had pulled into a lay-by to compose the message but had pulled out onto the busy A6068 in Higham near Burnley, Lancashire before pressing send.

Preston Crown Court heard how she hit struck Mr Mather throwing him into the air causing him to land in the carriageway where he was run over by a second car.

But Mr Justice Singh said he could spare the defendant jail mainly on the basis that if she went into custody there was no one to care for her elderly mother and her 12-year-old daughter. //
Equally bad, gromit.
Running over someone is usually an accident. strangling someone wouldn't appear to fall into that category.

She had a nervous break down.

/// A depressed university manager who strangled her mother after she suffered a nervous breakdown following a breakup has been jailed for ten months. ///

I could not see a male get away with what she has got away with, look at what some of them go through on a breakup, in some cases they not only lose their home but also their children?
From the article //Psychiatric examinations concluded she was suffering from a 'severe depressive episode' with psychotic symptoms at the time she killed her mother.//

That is not gender specific.

// When traced by police, Emma recollected little of what had happened only recalling her 'disappointment' at learning her mother no longer wanted to live with her.

Psychiatric examinations concluded she was suffering from a 'severe depressive episode' with psychotic symptoms at the time she killed her mother. //

Not an accodent, but not cold blooded murder either.

Seems to fit in with the rulings of your beloved ECOHR i.e. "The right to a family life".
I suppose that makes it alright then. I might be a bit cynical but I put that down to Ernest Saunders avoiding prosecution because he had dementia; and then becoming the only known person to completely recover from it. Margaret Moran's "madness" (straight out of Blackadder) also lacks a certain something.

Granted perhaps not cold blooded, but murder (or in this case manslaughter) just the same.

Bur then on second thoughts, who knows it wasn't in cold blood there were only two people there at the time and one of them is dead.
Browntrout
I will bow to your superior medical knowledge.
//Bur then on second thoughts, who knows it wasn't in cold blood there were only two people there at the time and one of them is dead.//

You have no confidence in psychiatrists?
The trouble with psychiatrists and other "experts" is that you can always find one happy to say whatever you want them to say.
