*Pit Bull is NOT a breed. It's a generic term often used to describe all dogs with similar traits and characteristics often known by the public as "Pit Bulls".

I saw this on the web, when researching this controversial dog. Is this statement correct? I always thought the pitbull was a breed of dog.

I always thought a pit bull was a breed.  American Pit Bull Terriers....

Well I always thought it was a breed, just like you and butter1 but apparently wikipedia disagree. Look at this link

The UK kennel club only recognises bull terriers and miniture bull terriers

http://www.the-kennel-club.org.uk/

However the Dangerous dog act prohibits 4 dogs:

the Pit Bull Terrier
the Japanese tosa
the Dogo Argentino
the Fila Brasileiro

You can find details on the dangerous dog act along with a downloadable leaflef describing what the Home Office say a Pit Bull Terrier is.

The AKC seemed to have renamed it as far as they are concerned http://www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=2157

Bit of a difficult one really...I mean we all know what a jack russell looks like but as such it is not a recognised breed, ditto a lurcher
