Further to my last response -

my lovely wife is in the city working, and is staying about two miles away from this mosque.

It is apparently one of the most holy Muslim places in the world - the nation's founding father is buried there.

Entrance rules are extremely strict, Mrs M had to wear an abaya - she already has several as they are required dress in Muslim schools - in order to visit.

The abaya is a garment designed to preserve a woman's modesty - it is a long tunic which does not reveal the contours of the wearer. on that basis, Ms. R's figure-hugging number doesn't really hack it in the modesty stakes!

The populace of Abu Dhabi are extremely reverential about this mosque, and any disprespect perceived to have been shown is taken very seriously - I reckon Ms. R. was lucky just to have been asked to leave.

There is no news of it locally yet - will keep you posted.

And the report says she took photographs inside the mosque but also talks of photos outside the mosque.

I am sure St Paul's has a requirement for their permission before any professional photo-shoot with a model or actress, or any film crew operates within its precincts and that any work should suit their own standards. And our cathedrals all have rules about decorum and respecting the sanctity of the building and, often, some restrictions on photography. So it is not surprising that this mosque has rules along those lines

a lot of "outside the mosque" is within the precincts, and probably rather more sacred than the little park at the back of St Paul's where people have lunch.

Quelle surprise. Having a show off like Rhianna sullying their holy precincts is a bit much. I don't blame them, especially as she was writhing around on the floor. None of the women who worship there would do that. The buzzword is Black Tents. The garment she is wearing shows off her figure and could not be described as a niqab in the proper sense. It is a beautiful mosque, but then with all that money sloshing around Abu Dhabi maybe not so surprising. To answer your question AOG I suppose after having tent-dwellers living outside St Pauls anything goes, we usually turn the other cheek.

when I think of being asked to cover my arms going into the cathedral in Malta, etc. etc, it's about conforming to the local levels of decency in a holy place. When I was in Saudi I was reminded always to wear an abaya, not to let my body show even though I would wear loose trousers and a long top. This is just a publicity stunt, and the Abu Dhabians are right to be offended.

boxtops - indeed - as I advised, this is one of the most holy places on earth to Muslims, and to see it used for a western pop star is deeply offensive to the devout Muslims of the city - she was lucky just to get asked to leave!

I recall attending a cathedral in Italy with my wife and in-laws, the ladies had covered up as advised, my F-I-L and I had shorts on, not thinking we would be causing offence. We were smartly marched off the premises! I was horrified, I would never knowingly offend any religious place or people, but then, I am not a pop star!

In Ghent, I was musing (praying silently even) in the crypt of the RC cathedral
and a nun swept up to me and said - "you go now we pray"
and gave a knowing smile as tho she were single handedly driving the sinners out of the temple
and didnt even bother to ask if I were RC or not and wanted to attend Mass or not.

just outside the main door I ritually beat the dust off my shoes.....
