Because it is both white and British.

Asparagus probably originated in Anatolia, brought to Britain by the Romans.

So even Turkish/Italian Green things become British White in the end
who says it is?

The Germans have always preferred it. I had some asparagus ice-cream last time I was in Germany. Most interesting.
Never understood it myself. The white asparagus in France lacks the taste of green asparagus. Why the French prefer it,if they do, is not clear.Perhaps they prefer the taste of white, but it strikes me as a food snobbery fad.

I don't like white asparagus much either Fred - wherever it comes from - but I do like the green stuff to have a stiff upper lip. ;o)

White or Green? It is a bit of a Jimmy Riddle.
It does help if asparagus is fresh which may account for British asparagus being better, but only in Britain. So if you want fresh asparagus buy it from your local asparagus grower and no the at-least-a-day-old stuff that lurks in Supermarkets. Our local restaurateur peels it before serving.
