My son was 34 yesterday. Half a lifetime ago, aged 17, he left school.

Every year since then he has met his form tutor for a swift half or two on his birthday.

Shows what respect the teacher had from, and for, his pupils, and also that No1 son wasn't such a bad lad after all!

Well done both of you.

A lot of teachers are not around long enough to form such relationships these days unfortunately.
... or are advised against doing so
I used to bump into my head of form from first year at high school in the pub from time to time. He was the firm but fair type which gained my respect. I wasn't always a model pupil and he kept me from getting into more serious trouble. I once had a fight with a fellow pupil and hurt my hand badly. We were both hauled into his office and made to shake hands. A while later in the day I was asked to go see him again. I thought I was going to be expelled but he just wanted to know how my hand was.
I finished teaching 35yrs ago, and now thanks to FB I am in touch with many of my pupils, they were 3-6yrs old when I taught them. They tell me all their problems and thoughts and it is wonderful that they still want to talk to me, I see their photos and even meet their families when they come to Ibiza, it is a wonderful bond, and they have all done well in life!
I finished teaching in 1991 but I'm still in touch with some of my former pupils (a few of whom are beneficiaries of my will).
