So the net has fallen. But I I can not imagine any dole sponging people left for a nice new life in the sun. I think it will be people with good jobs and people who contribute towards the company. All this means is that we have lost a lot of decent people. It means we need immigrants even more now I should imagine.

\\\The Office for National Statistics said 163,000 more people came to live in the UK for 12 months or more than left, compared with 247,000 the year before.\\

it may be my age......it may be my IQ.....but i cannot understand what that paragraph means.

Any help please?
Last year 163000 more people came here than went home.
The year before 247000 more people came here than went home so the nwt figure for immigration is down for last year
It is wonky Sqad, try this:

The Office for National Statistics said 163,000 more people came to live in the UK for 12 months or more, than left. This is compared with 247,000 the year before.

Or:

A certain number come to the country each year and the numbers displayed above show many many more "stayed" than left.

163k stayed this year. This is less than the 247k who stayed the year before.

These people stayed for "12 months or more"

We've accumulated less Jonny Foreigners this year, than we did previously.

Now, I just need someone to come and check over my handling of the stick :)
Thet's 'net' figure, nowt about newts.
Thanks folks.
I think it means ...if 352k left and 515k came in we only have 163k more to provide for.......
Still 163 000 too many, and as you point out very unlikely that those on the Nash went home.

Be interesting to see if three are any figures on that. Anyone know?
It's not clear whether visas issued for study count as visas issued for stays of more than 12 months. If they do, then stop everyone coming to study and, hooray, we are net exporters of people !

Though why anyone worries about foreigners living or settling here is not clear. Can see why an increase in population beyond sustainable levels would be a concern, but that would be so whatever the cause of the increase
