One must ask the same question as this reader,

/// This is all rather odd. Newham is reportedly one of the most economically/socially deprived areas of the country - but the 'community' appears to have access to , literally, vast sums of money to build the proposed mosque. Where is this money
now ? ///

Sorry youngmafbog you must have posted while I was constructing mine.
Great minds AOG !
I don't suppose the money was coming out of the public purse, so why is the source of the money or the fact that it was to be spent in a deprived area an issue?

no one was suggesting the money to build it would be coming from the public purse, but from the purse of the 'community' who apparently are living in a deprive area.

Churches are always swimming in money.

Look at areas in Northern Ireland when congregations don't have a pot to pee in. You never hear of priests being made redundant...
AOG, maybe a rich Arab was footing the bill - or do you think otherwise?
The Saudis are fairly liberal with their money if the mosques to be built subscribe their particular version of Islam.
I winder if there's a sin of simony in the Islamic world?
* wonder not winder ^
dont worry these people will get what they want eventually..... they always do
sp, again - it's not a church but a supersized Mosque, and one that would have had a huge impact on the area, as been stated already on previous thread. Naomi, perhaps look at JTH link. I was looking at a website earlier, and at one point there was a 280 thousand on line petition against this, so if Newham council have declined the build, then they have at least shown some sense.
Naomi, this was supposed to regenerate a run down area, not even sure how they manage to do that, it caters for only one section of the community, patently ignoring everyone else.
I haven't got an opinion on this but I think it's hilarious that they've printed a picture of Battersea Power Station in the report(!!)

Not necessarily.

Huge mosque will need windows cleaned, will need catering, will need transport for worshippers, will need security installed, will need a whole host of services provided by local companies.

You may never go to the O2 centre, but if you owned a local busines supplying a service needed by the owners, you'd be quids in.
don't expect the infidel to get much of a look in - they are not known for employing, using outside sources. And if think that a Mosque is the same as a church then you haven't been in a church lately. They may be places to worship, but that is all they have in common. Why anyone needs somewhere to bow down to God or Allah is quite beyond me.

In answer to your query about funding, Zakat (obligatory charity) is one of 5 pillars of Islam, a well to do Muslim MUST give 2.5% of their annual wealth (leftover) in charity. This often goes to their local Mosque.

There's an equivalent in Judiasm and Christianity (the tithe), but I don't know any proper Christians, so I don't know whether this still goes on.
Yes it does, sp, my mum pays 10% of her net wages to her church each month.
as on the other thread, if it's such a run down area, why on earth doesn't the local council build homes, which seem to be in short supply across the capital. Homes and businesses are what make communities, not a 10 thousand or more mega Mosque, that serves only the Muslim community. What about all the Christians, Hindu's, Sikhs in the area, shouldn't they get a look in too. And those who need a library, care for the elderly, and youngsters play areas, much more important wouldn't you agree.

/// I haven't got an opinion on this but I think it's hilarious that they've printed a picture of Battersea Power Station in the report(!!) ///

It was simply to provide a perspective of the size that the proposed Mosque would be.

/// The mosque, which was planned to be around the size of Battersea Power Station (pictured), would have had 40ft minarets, an Islamic library, sports facilities and eight flats for visiting clerics ///
