zedbloke . I know what the concept of the Dark Ages means but I queried how it applied to Egypt when going back could even be better.
If you go back through Egypt's history its people have enjoyed a freedom far superior to say Iran or Saudi Arabia.
During the 19th and 20th centuries i.e. the colonial period and as a part of the Ottoman Empire Egypt had more personal freedom than they do at the moment.
Islamism and all that implies , particularly the use of Sharia Law, is a modern phenomenon ,mainly since the 1970s. and Egypt has resisted it more than most Arab countries.
