Commemorating the Diamond Jubilee

There are plenty of local celebrations planned to mark the Diamond Jubilee, but what is happening where you live to provide something long term? Apart from planting a tree there seems to be a lack of ideas where I live and it would be interesting to know what others are doing. Thank you.

Not really. I have no kids and two dogs so can't go far or spend ages out of the house, especially if its a blazing hot day, so apart from checking for firework displays, i haven't taken much notice of what is planned locally. My Sis will be staying and we are going to put up bunting along the front of the house to annoy the neighbours and watch the festivities on TV.

We're having a playground for the elderly . It's like a kids' playground but instead of slides and roundabouts it has equipment for exercise . Sounds a daft idea to me, and I'm on the Parish Council which chose it.
Last time, we had a bridge built across the river which separates the Little and Great villages. Another stupid idea; far better to keep the two separated and make it easier to keep their lot out.

Yes, coldicote, I sometimes think I am the only sane one on the Parish Council ! They are in love with any scheme, however daft, which has the magic words ' a grant may be available' attached. This ignores a)the scheme is daft, and nobody will benefit, or so very few that it's not economic b) the words are ' may be' c) the grant is only partial; the parish has to find the rest d) there will be no grant for insuring or maintaining the equipment, bridge, or whatever is bought; that will fall on the Parish, in perpetuity or until it is scrapped. Nobody seems to think that 'free money' doesn't exist. Waste is waste; it is being paid for by the taxpayers, in one way or other.
Still, we didn't get a skate park for the, perhaps, 30 children in the village who might use it and none of whom had asked for one, at a vast cost. But the idea was seriously promoted. We could do with a Tesco, but somehow that wasn't well received ! I'd have consented to it being built on my land. No consideration for the local farmer, that's the trouble with these townies who get on Parish Councils !
