Hypothetical, but think of the can of worms if some far sighted NOTW employee had her phone hacked before this all blew up...never know could happen ;)

The security services including the police do this regularly and its quite legal.
Are you sure about that Rov? That it is legal?
Interception or 'hacking' is not an offence if there is lawful authority to do so (such as an under an interception warrant) or is by a person with a right to control or use private telecoms transmission system...

I seem to recall a few years back there were claims that Rebekah Wade (as she was then) had indeed been a victim of hacking by the NotW after leaving as editor to head up The Sun.
