Does any tournament in the world ban this awful screeching? If not should be have a decibel meter fitted at tournaments so that exceeding this limit would involve a penalty?

We know they can cut down if they really want to as players like Venus Williams have cut it out on occasions.

someone pointed out yesterday it's similar to the expulsion of breath when you make a move in karate, and related to maximising exertion. If you prefer your sports silent, then it's either the mute button or chess.
Would it be all right then for the crowd to screech out every time a player made their serve?

Yes the screechers, howlers and grunters should be told to button it.
Not for my sake, as a viewer. I find it irritating, but that isn't the point.
It is plainly designed to intimidate the opponent - many of the players involved have been observed on the practice courts completely "gruntless" which stifles the idea that it's an involuntary action. And I believe it even happens on drop shots.
